O objetivo do presente estudo foi abordar a terapêutica com a toxina botulínica tipo A, na disfunção da articulação temporomandibular (DTM), no que tange as suas indicações, contra-indicações e possíveis efeitos colaterais. A metodologia usada nos trabalhos, ora citada, resultou de busca em base de dados (Medline) publicados entre outubro de 1980 e fevereiro de 2014. Podemos concluir que: a toxina botulínica aplicada em músculos comprometidos pela doença e, portanto, com dor, reduz o desconforto dos indivíduos acometidos. As principais contraindicações são em pacientes que sofrem de doenças neuromusculares (miastenia gravis, distúrbio de transmissão neuromuscular, Síndrome de Lambert Eaton), doença autoimune adquirida, mulheres grávidas e/ou em período de lactação, pacientes que usam aminoglicosídeos e que possuem reações alérgicas a toxina. Nada digno de nota foi encontrado nos limites da presente revisão no que tange a efeitos colaterais. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Toxina botulínica tipo A; Articulação temporomandibular; Músculos da mastigação.
