Particles beyond the Standard Model (SM) can generically have lifetimes that are long compared to SM particles at the weak scale. When produced at experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, these long-lived particles (LLPs) can decay far from the interaction vertex of the primary proton–proton collision. Such LLP signatures are distinct from those of promptly decaying particles that are targeted by the majority of searches for new physics at the LHC, often requiring customized techniques to identify, for example, significantly displaced decay vertices, tracks with atypical properties, and short track segments. Given their non-standard nature, a comprehensive overview of LLP signatures at the LHC is beneficial to ensure that possible avenues of the discovery of new physics are not overlooked. Here we report on the joint work of a community of theorists and experimentalists with the ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb experiments—as well as those working on dedicated experiments such as MoEDAL, milliQan, MATHUSLA, CODEX-b, and FASER—to survey the current state of LLP searches at the LHC, and to chart a path for the development of LLP searches into the future, both in the upcoming Run 3 and at the high-luminosity LHC. The work is organized around the current and future potential capabilities of LHC experiments to generally discover new LLPs, and takes a signature-based approach to surveying classes of models that give rise to LLPs rather than emphasizing any particular theory motivation. We develop a set of simplified models; assess the coverage of current searches; document known, often unexpected backgrounds; explore the capabilities of proposed detector upgrades; provide recommendations for the presentation of search results; and look towards the newest frontiers, namely high-multiplicity ‘dark showers’, highlighting opportunities for expanding the LHC reach for these signals.

We attempt to explain recent anomalies in semileptonic B decays at LHCb via a composite Higgs model, in which both the Higgs and an SU(2) L -triplet leptoquark arise as pseudo-Goldstone bosons of the strong dynamics. Fermion masses are assumed to be generated via the mechanism of partial compositeness, which largely determines the leptoquark couplings and implies non-universal lepton interactions. The latter are needed to accommodate tensions in the b → sµµ dataset and to be consistent with a discrepancy measured at LHCb in the ratio of B + → K + µ + µ − to B + → K + e + e − branching ratios. The data imply that the leptoquark should have a mass of around a TeV. We find that the model is not in conflict with current flavour or direct production bounds, but we identify a few observables for which the new physics contributions are close to current limits and where the leptoquark is likely to show up in future measurements. The leptoquark will be pair-produced at the LHC and decay predominantly to third-generation quarks and leptons, and LHC13 searches will provide further strong bounds.

We propose a mechanism that allows for sizeable flavour violation in quark-lepton currents, while suppressing flavour changing neutral currents in quark-quark and lepton-lepton sectors. The mechanism is applied to the recently proposed "4321" renormalizable model, which can accommodate the current experimental anomalies in B-meson decays, both in charged and neutral currents, while remaining consistent with all other indirect flavour and electroweak precision measurements and direct searches at high-p T . To support this claim, we present an exhaustive phenomenological survey of this fully calculable UV complete model and highlight the rich complementarity between indirect and direct searches. A.7 Vector-fermion interactions in the mass basis 47 A.8 Tri-linear gauge boson vertices 49 A.9 Renormalisation group equations 51 A.10 SU (4) generators 524. there are very severe constraints from flavour observables in pure leptonic channels, most notably in processes violating lepton universality and lepton flavour.Since the first point clearly contrasts with the remaining ones, finding a coherent NP framework to explain all these facts remains a non-trivial challenge. However, the points above are also suggesting in a (qualitative) way their own solutions. Indeed a viable NP scenario should:1. contain a leptoquark with large flavour violating couplings in order to trigger the anomalous semileptonic decays in charged currents; *

Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are well-motivated low-energy relics of high-energy extensions of the Standard Model, which interact with the known particles through higher-dimensional operators suppressed by the mass scale Λ of the new-physics sector. Starting from the most general dimension-5 interactions, we discuss in detail the evolution of the ALP couplings from the new-physics scale to energies at and below the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking. We derive the relevant anomalous dimensions at two-loop order in gauge couplings and one-loop order in Yukawa interactions, carefully considering the treatment of a redundant operator involving an ALP coupling to the Higgs current. We account for one-loop (and partially two-loop) matching contributions at the weak scale, including in particular flavor-changing effects. The relations between different equivalent forms of the effective Lagrangian are discussed in detail. We also construct the effective chiral Lagrangian for an ALP interacting with photons and light pseudoscalar mesons, pointing out important differences with the corresponding Lagrangian for the QCD axion.

Abstract:The LHCb collaboration has recently presented their result on R K = B (B + → K + µ + µ − ) /B (B + → K + e + e − ) for the dilepton invariant mass bin m 2 = 1 − 6 GeV 2 ( = µ, e). The measurement shows an intriguing 2.6 σ deviation from the Standard Model (SM) prediction. In view of this, we study model independent New Physics (NP) explanations of R K consistent with other measurements involving b → s + − transition, relaxing the assumption of lepton universality. We perform a Bayesian statistical fit to the NP Wilson Coefficients and compare the Bayes Factors of the different hypotheses in order to quantify their goodness-of-fit. We show that the data slightly favours NP in the muon sector over NP in the electron sector.

Abstract:We explore the phenomenology of a QCD-like dark sector which confines around the GeV scale. The dark sector inherits a flavour structure from a coupling between dark quarks and SM quarks via a heavy mediator, which leads to exciting new phenomena. While stable baryonic bound states are the dark matter candidates, the phenomenology is dominated by the lightest composite mesons, the dark pions, which can have decay lengths ranging from millimetres to hundreds of meters. For masses below 1.5 GeV, their exclusive decays to SM mesons are calculated for the first time by matching both dark and visible sectors to a chiral Lagrangian. Constraints from big bang nucleosynthesis, dark matter direct detection and flavour single out a small region of allowed parameter space for dark pion masses below 5 GeV. It is best probed by the fixed target experiments NA62 and SHiP, where dark pions can be produced copiously in rare decays like B → Kπ D . The dominant π D → K ± π ∓ and π D → 3π decay modes are a smoking gun for a CP-odd, flavour violating new resonance. Heavier dark pions are best searched for at the LHC, where they decay after hadronisation to produce jets which emerge into SM states within the detector. Here the flavour structure ensures different flavours emerge on different length scales, leading to a striking new feature in the emerging jets signature.

Abstract:We propose renormalizable models of new physics that can explain various anomalies observed in decays of B-mesons to electron and muon pairs. The new physics states couple to linear combinations of Standard Model fermions, yielding a pattern of flavour violation that gives a consistent fit to the gamut of flavour data. Accidental symmetries prevent contributions to baryon-and lepton-number-violating processes, as well as enforcing a loop suppression of new physics contributions to flavour violating processes. Data require that the new flavour-breaking couplings are largely aligned with the Yukawa couplings of the SM and so we also explore patterns of flavour symmetry breaking giving rise to this structure.

Axionlike particles (ALPs) with lepton-flavor-violating couplings can be probed in exotic muon and tau decays. The sensitivity of different experiments depends strongly on the ALP mass and its couplings to leptons and photons. For ALPs that can be resonantly produced, the sensitivity of three-body decays such as μ → 3e and τ → 3μ exceeds by many orders of magnitude that of radiative decays like μ → eγ and τ → μγ. Searches for these two types of processes are therefore highly complementary. We discuss experimental constraints on ALPs with a single dominant lepton-flavor-violating coupling. Allowing for one or more such couplings offers qualitatively new ways to explain the anomalies related to the magnetic moments of the muon or the electron. The explanation of both anomalies requires lepton-flavornonuniversal or lepton-flavor-violating ALP couplings.
