Este artículo examina los proyectos relacionados con la construcción de caminos, ferrocarriles, puertos y canales, que se realizaron o se intentaron llevar a cabo, bajo los gobiernos federales y estatales entre 1823-1838. Se centra en el contexto guatemalteco, pero también expone argumentos más amplios sobre la importancia de la infraestructura en la formación de los Estados y las identidades nacionales después de la independencia centroamericana. Explora el concepto de infraestructura como poder estatal desde distintos ángulos, al contextualizar proyectos específicos en su espacio geográfico y social. La relevancia de la infraestructura no solo debe ser visto en sus conexiones externas sino también a nivel de los nexos internos, donde la infraestructura era vinculada con la agricultura, la mano de obra, la población y el territorio. De este modo, la historia de la infraestructura proporciona una excelente forma de conectar las historias locales con las nacionales e internacionales.
