Au Québec, pour obtenir leur diplôme d’études secondaires, les élèves doivent réussir le cours d’histoire du Québec et du Canada (MELS, 2003). Pour y parvenir, il est essentiel non seulement d’obtenir la note de passage dans le cours d’histoire de 4e secondaire, mais également de réussir l’épreuve unique, un examen certificatif qui compte pour 50 % de la note globale de l’élève (MEES, 2017a). Le taux de réussite à l’examen demeure faible : environ 71 % de 2012 à 2015 (MEES, 2015). Comment expliquer cette situation ? Ce texte présentera les résultats d’une analyse de 194 copies d’épreuves uniques d’histoire de juin 2014. Cette analyse suggère que la principale faiblesse des élèves se situe au niveau de leur habileté à interpréter les sources du dossier documentaire, particulièrement les sources iconographiques. Cette difficulté serait accentuée si le titre ou la légende associés à l’image ne partagent pas le même vocabulaire que celui employé dans la question.
