Few stress factors from the academic environment and some socio-demographic characteristics contributed to the reduction of sleep quality in students.
Objective: To analyze the scientific results published in national and international nursing journals related to the physiological and emotional responses of nursing students. Methods: We performed an integrative review of scientific literature, focusing on the databases PUBMED, MEDLINE, CINAHL, LILACS and SciELO. In the sample, we included works available in full text, in Portuguese, English or Spanish, published between July 2004 to July 2009, and which contained at least one descriptor in the title and three in the text, directly related to physiological and psychological manifestations of stress in nursing students. Results: Of 126 articles identified, only 13 referred to the theme; of these, five addressed psychological manifestations, four addressed physiological manifestations, and four others identified both. Of the total, four studies were longitudinal and nine were transverse. Conclusion: In terms of results, it was observed that the theme should be further studied and developed in the process of teaching and learning of nursing, because it was verified that stress is a frequent occurrence and has major consequences for these students.
The present investigation entitled "Stress Level and Coping Strategies in Nursing Students At The Unsa Faculty, Arequipa 2006," had as its aim to determine the relationship between stress level and coping strategies, to this effect a cross-sectional type study with correlation design was made. The sample under study was 234 students from 1st to 4th year, selected through a grouped probability sampling. For the gathering of information, the survey was used as a method; a questionnaire as the technique, and the Social Readjustment Rating Scale of Holmes and Rahe and the COPE's Questionnaire of Coping Estimation as instruments, which consider problem focused strategies, emotion and perception. The conclusions obtained are: 1) the majority of the studied population was of female gender, with an age range from 19 to 20 years, the year of study noted a higher number of students and higher level of stress the 1st year, followed by 2nd, 3rd and 4th year. The great the majority of students reported regular enrolment, 2) The stress level was severe (29.91%). 3) The most utilized strategies directed at the problem were "planning" and "active coping," aimed at emotion: "positive reinterpretation and growth" and "denial," and targeted to perception: "mental misunderstanding" and "focusing and release of emotions." Finally, the statistical test of correlation of F statistic was used for hypothesis verification, and it concluded that there is a relationship between the level of stress and coping strategies.
We intended to evaluate the impact of coping strategies on the intensity of stress on hemato-oncology nurses, using a transversal analytical study conducted with 18 nurses between March and April of 2010. We used a form for socio-demographic characterization, the Occupational Coping Scale to evaluate the coping strategies and the Nurses Stress Inventory to evaluate the stress. There was no significant correlation between coping strategies and stress intensity, however, in the dispersion analysis, the use of control and avoidance strategies increased stress intensity while the use of symptoms management decreased its intensity. Nurses with less time working in the health institution and those without a postgraduate degree presented higher stress intensity. We concluded that Symptoms Management strategy has a positive effect on the stress of hemato-oncological nurses, where the reduced perspective of healing and the chronic condition of the patients are inherent to the nursing work and make proactive and avoidance actions difficult.
