Problemática: la denominación de Pueblo Mágico, otorgada en el año 2011 a Xicotepec de Juárez, no evidencia que existan mejoras sustantivas tanto para sus pobladores como para los empresarios del sector turístico. Objetivos: determinar estrategias de desarrollo económico y sostenible en Xicotepec, Pueblo Mágico. Materiales y métodos: investigación de carácter cuantitativo con diseño no experimental, transeccional y descriptivo. Se aplicaron dos cuestionarios tipo encuesta a 76 empresarios y 355 ciudadanos en el municipio de Xicotepec. Resultados: principalmente, se encuentra que los ciudadanos no perciben la denominación de Pueblo Mágico como un factor detonante del turismo y tampoco como elemento que mejore su calidad de vida, debido a que el 49,86 % de los pobladores considera que es regular y el 21,69 % malo. Por otra parte, los empresarios reflejan varias áreas de oportunidad en el ámbito laboral y de operación. Sin embargo, la evaluación que le dan a la denominación de Pueblo Mágico es regular para el 65,79 % y solo el 23,68 % considera que es algo bueno. Discusión: en términos generales, se percibe que Xicotepec, al igual que otros Pueblos Mágicos, cuenta con diversas problemáticas para que el turismo sea considerado como un verdadero detonante de desarrollo local y sea un factor de beneficio tanto para pobladores como para empresarios. Conclusiones: Xicotepec tiene la oportunidad de generar nuevas formas de vivir en su entorno social, económico, competitivo y sustentable. Se requieren redes y vínculos de colaboración que permitan contribuir a una comercialización de apertura y fortalecimiento turístico, que impacte significativamente a las familias xicotepenses. Contribución / originalidad: la principal contribución de este trabajo tiene que ver con la identificación de los aspectos actuales que viven tanto pobladores como empresarios, los cuales pueden servir de base para que los actores decisores implementen estrategias de mejora.
