BackgroundThe aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between facet tropism and spinal degenerative diseases, such as degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis, degenerative lumbar scoliosis, and lumbar disc herniation.MethodsThis study retrospectively analysed clinical data from the Department of Orthopaedics at The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University. Ninety-two patients were diagnosed with lumbar spondylolisthesis, 64 patients with degenerative scoliosis, and 86 patients with lumbar disc herniation between 1 October 2014 and 1 October 2016. All patients were diagnosed using 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging and underwent conservative or operative treatment. Facet tropism was defined as greater than a ten degree between the facet joint angles on both sides.ResultsFor L3-L4 degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis, one out of six cases had tropism compared to seven out of the 86 controls (p = 0.474). At the L4-L5 level, 17/50 cases had tropism compared to 4/42 cases in the control group (p = 0.013). At the L5-S1 level, 18/36 cases had tropism compared to 7/56 controls (p = 0.000). For degenerative lumbar scoliosis at the L1-L5 level, 83/256 cases had tropism as compared to 36/256 controls (p = 0.000). For L3-L4 lumbar disc herniation two out of eight cases had tropism compared to 14/78 controls (p = 0.625). At the L4-L5 level, 19/44 cases had tropism compared to four out of 42 controls (p = 0.001). At the L5-S1 level, 24/34 cases had tropism compared to 10/52 controls (p = 0.000).ConclusionAt the L4–5 and L5-S1 levels, facet tropism is associated with degenerative spondylolisthesis. In the degenerative lumbar scoliosis group, the number of case with facet tropism was significantly higher than that of the control group. Facet tropism was associated with lumbar disc herniation at the L4–5 and L5-S1 levels. Overall, in these three lumbar degenerative diseases, facet tropism is a common phenomenon.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (10.1186/s12891-017-1849-x) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.
We investigated the effects of herb extracts, Rhus verniciflua, Agrimonia pilosa, Sophora japonica, and Paeonia suffruticosa, on the lowering of blood glucose levels and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. After 4 weeks, oral administration of Rhus verniciflua extract (50 mg/kg) exhibited a significant decrease in blood glucose levels in diabetic rats (P<0.05). Blood TBARS concentrations, the products of glucose oxidation in blood, were also lowered by Rhus verniciflua extract supplementation. In addition, Sophora japonica and Paeonia suffruticosa extracts significantly reduced TBARS levels versus diabetic controls. Serum concentrations of liver-function marker enzymes, GOT and GPT, were also restored by Rhus verniciflua (50 mg/kg) supplementation in diabetic rats.
The present study revealed that wearing high-heeled shoes can lead to increased LL and an uneconomic body position. This finding may help explain why some women complain that wearing high-heeled shoes causes them to experience low back pain.
BackgroundAlthough the pathogenesis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) remains controversial, genetic factors are thought to play key roles in the development of AIS. In a recent genome-wide association study, a polymorphism in the interleukin-17 receptor C (IL-17RC) gene was reported to be associated with the susceptibility to AIS, implicating IL-17RC as a novel predisposing gene for AIS. However, as this association has not been replicated in other populations, its global applicability remains unclear.MethodsA total of 529 Chinese girls with AIS and 512 healthy age-matched controls were recruited in this case–control study from June 2007 to December 2009. Polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis was performed to detect the genotype of the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs708567 in the IL-17RC gene. Case–control and case-only studies were performed to determine the association between the IL-17RC gene polymorphism and the susceptibility to and curve severity of AIS.ResultsThe GG genotype and G allele frequencies were significantly higher in the AIS patients than in the controls (χ2 test: P = 0.023 and 0.028, respectively). The risk for the GG genotype is 1.550-fold (95% CI: 1.062 - 2.261) higher than the AG genotype, and the risk for the G allele is 1.507-fold (95% CI: 1.046 - 2.172) higher than the A allele. Additionally, a subgroup of skeletally mature AIS patients (n = 241) who carried the GG genotype showed a significantly higher mean maximum Cobb angle than those carrying the AG genotype (36.01 ± 13.12° vs. 28.92 ± 7.43°, P = 0.007).ConclusionsThis study confirms the significant association between the IL-17RC gene polymorphism and the susceptibility to and curve severity of AIS in a Chinese Han population, suggesting that the IL-17RC gene is an AIS-predisposing gene in Chinese Han population.
Locating nanomedicines at the active sites plays a pivotal role in the nanoparticle-based cancer therapy field. Herein, a multifunctional nanotherapeutic is designed by using graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with rich carboxyl groups as the supporter for hyaluronic acid (HA)–methotrexate (MTX) prodrug modification via an adipicdihydrazide cross-linker, achieving synergistic multistage tumor-targeting and combined chemo-photothermal therapy. As a tumor-targeting biomaterial, HA can increase affinity of the nanocarrier toward CD44 receptor for enhanced cellular uptake. MTX, a chemotherapeutic agent, can also serve as a tumor-targeting enhancer toward folate receptor based on its similar structure with folic acid. The prepared nanosystems possess a sheet shape with a dynamic size of approximately 200 nm and pH-responsive drug release. Unexpectedly, the physiological stability of HA–MTX prodrug-decorated GO nanosystems in PBS, serum, and even plasma is more excellent than that of HA-decorated GO nanosystems, while both of them exhibit an enhanced photothermal effect than GO nanosheets. More importantly, because of good blood compatibility as well as reduced undesired interactions with blood components, HA–MTX prodrug-decorated GO nanosystems exhibited remarkably superior accumulation at the tumor sites by passive and active targeting mechanisms, achieving highly effective synergistic chemo-photothermal therapeutic effect upon near-infrared laser irradiation, efficient ablation of tumors, and negligible systemic toxicity. Hence, the HA–MTX prodrug-decorated hybrid nanosystems have a promising potential for synergistic multistage tumor-targeting therapy.
