Postural displacements in response to emotional activation have recently been proposed as a direct and objective index of approach–avoidance behavior in humans. Here, we present the results of an experiment designed to assess spontaneous postural responses to discrete affective pictures, briefly presented in random order of valence. Our findings question the interpretation of phasic postural responses to emotional stimuli as approach–avoidance behavior. Further, we identify a robust dynamical pattern, characterized by specific features indicating that attentional processes may play a role in human postural responses to emotional stimuli.

Both the cue reactivity and startle reflex modulation paradigms have been used in addiction research to investigate the motivational mechanism of craving. However, while there is a growing body of literature that indicates the utility of 3D technology in addiction-relevant cue reactivity research, no study has been reported on its utility using the startle reflex modulation paradigm. The aim of the present study was to extend the 3D technology to research on tobacco craving using the startle reflex methodology. Participants were 32 university students who smoked more than 10 cigarettes daily. They participated in a psychophysiological testing to assess the modulation of the startle reflex induced by viewing pleasant, unpleasant, and tobacco-related 3D immersive environment stimuli (3D-IEs). Results confirmed that 3D-IEs were effective in inducing emotional states to modulate the startle response. Pleasant and unpleasant 3D-IEs modulated the startle response, as expected: The reflex was increased while viewing unpleasant stimuli and decreased while viewing pleasant ones. Tobacco-related 3D-IEs were similar to unpleasant stimuli in increasing the startle response. However, they were subjectively evaluated as positive, which suggests that the mechanism underlying craving coactivates both aversive and appetitive motivational tendencies.

Motivation to be abstinent is a relevant contextual factor accounting for variance in cue reactivity in individual smokers.

Erotic scenes and images of mutilated bodies are emotional stimuli that have repeatedly shown to evoke specific neurophysiological responses associated with enhanced attention and perceptual processing. Remarkably however, only a handful of studies have investigated human motor reactions to emotional activation as a direct index of physical approximation or withdrawal. Given the inconclusive results of these studies, the approach-avoidance distinction, one of the most salient concepts in human motivational research, remains a broadly exploited hypothesis that has never been empirically demonstrated. Here, we investigate postural responses elicited by discrete emotional stimuli in healthy young adults. We discover that both positive and negative affective pictures induce a significant posterior deviation from postural baseline equilibrium. Further, we find that neutral pictures also evoke posterior deviation, although with a less pronounced amplitude. Exploring the dynamical evolution of postural responses to emotional pictures at high temporal resolution, we uncover a characteristic profile that remains stable for stimuli from all three affective categories. In contrast, the postural response amplitude is modulated by the emotional content of the stimulus. Our observations do not support the interpretation of postural responses to affective picture-viewing as approach-avoidance behavior. Instead, our findings indicate the involvement of a previously unrecognized motor component of the physiological mechanism underlying human orienting responses.

La estabilidad emocional y su relación con el daño psíquico en mujeres españolas víctimas de violencia de género ResumenIntroducción: La violencia contra la mujer constituye un problema de salud pública y se ha convertido en una de las principales causas de problemas de salud en las víctimas que la sufren. Se conoce poco sobre los factores de vulnerabilidad ante estas experiencias. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar la estabilidad/inestabilidad emocional como factor clave en la capacidad de afrontar una situación de violencia de género y sus consecuencias sobre la salud física y psíquica de las víctimas. Métodos: Se trata de un estudio trasversal realizado sobre una muestra de 151 mujeres españolas. Las mujeres fueron evaluadas mediante el Cuestionario de Salud General de Goldberg y el Inventario de Personalidad 16PF de Cattell. Resultados: Encontramos una relación significativa entre la estabilidad emocional y la puntuación total del Goldberg y sus cuatro subescalas de síntomas somáticos, ansiedad, adaptación socio-laboral y depresión (p<0.001). Conclusión: Niveles altos de estabilidad emocional podrían indicar fortaleza psicológica y menor vulnerabilidad, pudiendo favorecer que el daño psicológico en la mujer víctima sea menor. AbstractIntroduction: Violence against women is a public health problem and has become one of the main causes of health problems in the victims who suffer. Little is known about the factors of vulnerability to these experiences. Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the emotional stability/instability as the key factor for coping with a gender violence situation and its effects on the physical and psychic health of the victims. Methods: It´s a cross-sectional study conducted on a sample of 151 spanish women. The women were evaluated using the Goldberg General Health Questionnaire and Cattells 16PF Inventory. Results: Emotional stability was found to have a significant correlation with the Total Goldberg score and with its four subscales of symptoms, anxiety, withdrawal and depression (p<.001). Conclusion: A high emotional stability can be seen as an indicator of psychological strength and less vulnerability, hence less psychological damage of the victim.

Objectives: To report the epidemiological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of gastric adenocarcinoma at the Joliot Curie Cancer Institute.Results: There were about 136 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma over a 13-year period. The sex ratio was 1.125. The mean age was 54.29 years. The main risk factors found were epigastric pain, (9.6%), a history of gastric cancer surgery, (1.5%), and smoking (15.4%). Epigastric pain was the most frequent symptom, (65.4%), followed by vomiting. Patients were classified WHO 2 and 3 for 61.8% of the cases according to their clinical status. An epigastric mass was found in 44 patients, (32.4%), and ascites in 8 patients, (5.9%). Hepatomegaly and a sus clavicular node were found in 7% of the cases. Anemia was found in 59 patients, (43.3%), and hemoglobin was less than 8 in 16 patients, (11.7%). Localization was mostly antro pyloric (59.6%) and ulcerous-budding cancer dominated the macroscopic aspects (40.41%). The disease was at stage I in 2.4% of the cases, at stage II in 15.6% of the cases, at stage III in 4% of the cases, and at stage IV in 78% of the cases. Histo pathology showed tubulous or intestinal adenocarcinoma in more than 61% of the patients. Curative surgery was performed in 31 patients (22.8%) and palliative surgery in 39 patients (28.7%). Chemotherapy was given to 53 patients (39%), including 46 cases of palliative chemotherapy (33.8%). After a mean follow-up time of six months, there was a local-regional recurrence in 2 patients, metachronous metastasis in 66 patients (48.5% of the cases); death occurs in 23 patients (16.9% off the cases). Conclusion:Gastric adenocarcinoma in West Africa is a heterogenous histopathologic disease dominated by intestinal and tubular subtypes. It is diagnosed at an advanced stage. Its prognosis is very poor. Routine endoscopy and neo adjuvant chemo radiotherapy should be developed.
