Frente a los reiterados cuestionamientos a la distinción entre empirismo y racionalismo para pensar la filosofía en el período moderno, han surgido nuevas distinciones como la de filosofía especulativa/experimental, que se proponen como más adecuadas para reflejar el quehacer de los filósofos de la Modernidad. Nos proponemos evaluar la validez de esta distinción respecto de la filosofía moral experimental del siglo XVIII y puntualmente de la propuesta de Hume. Mostraremos que si la distinción se entiende en términos excluyentes, resulta inapropiada porque el mismo Hume plantea que la especulación es aquello que define a la filosofía. Propone, además, una conciliación entre la práctica de la experimentación y la teorización antes que considerarlas como excluyentes. Finalmente, dejaremos en claro que aquello que condena como “falsa filosofía” no puede entenderse como sinónimo de filosofía especulativa
RESUMEN Existe cierta interpretación restringida de la metodología humeana que entiende su experimentalismo únicamente en términos de la reducción de los enunciados epistémicos a impresiones sensibles de carácter privado accesibles mediante la introspección. Nos proponemos revisar esta interpretación a partir de la crítica a la vinculación que establece entre la máxima de no ir más allá de la experiencia y el principio de la copia. Mostraremos que esta interpretación no se condice con el modo en que Hume concibe el método experimental, ya que hay evidencia textual para proponer que la experiencia no debe entenderse sólo en términos de impresiones sensibles, y que la ciencia de la naturaleza humana no se restringe al estudio de los contenidos mentales exclusivamente, sino que se nutre de la observación de la interacción social de igual modo. Finalmente, dejaremos en claro que el método que Hume propone no impide la verificación intersubjetiva de la evidencia empírica, ya que el principio de la simpatía posibilita la comunicación de los estados mentales, lo que los despoja de su carácter privado.
En este trabajo nos proponemos hacer un aporte para esclarecer el sentido y la función de la experiencia en el marco de la teoría del conocimiento de Hume. Para ello examinaremos dos interpretaciones que pueden reconstruirse en la literatura secundaria: la que la entiende como impresiones simples de sensación y la que la concibe como patrones de percepciones conectadas. Consideramos que la primera perspectiva no es adecuada para comprender el rol epistémico de la experiencia, lo que nos inclina hacia la segunda interpretación. Sin embargo, esta última no ha sido lo suficientemente desarrollada por los autores que la sugieren. Nuestro propósito es llevar a cabo esa tarea pendiente, ofreciendo una serie de precisiones que la hacen más robusta a los fines de elucidar por qué para Hume la experiencia es la piedra de toque en el conocimiento sobre cuestiones de hecho. Así, mostraremos que el sentido que adquiere la experiencia en las inferencias causales es el de casos que recogemos mediante la observación y organizamos en colecciones o patrones, los que funcionan como evidencia para establecer o justificar enunciados epistémicos. Por último, para comprender la especificidad de su función en este tipo de inferencias, distinguiremos la experiencia de las impresiones y del hábito.
