In research on networked control systems (NCS), the performance of the control system is assumed to be affected by network-induced parameters such as delays, jitters, packet losses and link failures. In this paper, two delay compensation methods are studied, adaptive Smith Predictor and robust control, in the framework of Networked Control Systems while considering the protocol specifications. First, a clock synchronization protocol is implemented in each device of the network, thereby providing the possibility of end-to-end delay measurement, and a compensation strategy based on this measurement and the adaptive Smith Predictor is applied.Secondly, the end-to-end upper bound delay estimate is calculated on the basis of the network architecture and the traffic estimation, and then subsequently used in a robust control based compensation strategy. The switched Ethernet network is used as an example of the communication network of the NCS.
The objective of process control in the mineral industry is to optimise the recovery of the valuable minerals, while maintaining the quality of the concentrates delivered to the metal extraction plants. The paper presents a survey of the control approaches for ore size reduction and mineral separation processes. The present limitations of the measurement instrumentation are discussed, as well as the methods to upgrade the information delivered by the sensors. In practice, the overall economic optimisation goal must be hierarchically decomposed into simpler control problems. Model-based and AI methods are reviewed, mainly for grinding and flotation processes, and classified as mature, active or emerging.
Early detection of process disturbances and prediction of malfunctions in process equipment improve the safety of the process, minimize the time and resources needed for maintenance, and increase the uniform quality of the products. The objective of online-monitoring is to trace the state of the process and the condition of process equipment in real-time, and to detect faults as early as possible. In this article the different properties of the online-monitoring methods applied in the process industries are first reviewed. A description of the systematic development of the online-monitoring system for an industrial dearomatization process, specifically for flash point and distillation curve analysers, is then presented. Finally, the results of offline and online tests of the monitoring system using real industrial data from the Fortum Naantali Refinery in Finland, are described and discussed. The developed onlinemonitoring application was successful in real-time process monitoring and it fulfilled the industrial requirements. PACS: 07.05.Mh; 07.05.Tp; 83.85.Ns
In the face of strong competition, the pulp and paper industry is aiming at higher pro"tability through increased productivity and the reduction of costs. In addition, on the global scale the industry is facing increasing market demands for higher product quality, more specialty products and improved production #exibility and environmental protection. Consequently, extensive research is being conducted to improve existing processes. One alternative, which is gaining increasing attention within the industry, is the improved control of existing processes by means of intelligent systems. In this paper, an intelligent kiln control system is presented. In the system, neural network models are used in conjunction with advanced high-level controllers based on fuzzy logic principles and a novel linguistic equation approach. Finally, the testing results of the system are presented and discussed.
This paper proposes a valve stiction detection system which selects valve stiction detection algorithms based on characterizations of the data. For this purpose, novel data feature indexes are proposed, which quantify the presence of oscillations, meannonstationarity, noise and nonlinearities in a given data sequence. The selection is then performed according to the conditions on the index values in which each method can be applied successfully. Finally, the stiction detection decision is given by combining the detection decisions made by the selected methods. The paper ends demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed valve stiction detection system with benchmark industrial data.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
