Because of the climate change and emerging need for an environmentally sustainable production system, circular economic characteristics have come to the front in many studies. There are many challenges in this shift toward a circular value chain. Still, it is unquestionable that the analysis of consumers’ behaviour is crucial, because without their engagement, circular systems cannot work correctly. This article aimed to explore the circular characteristics of consumers’ attitude towards food purchasing in Hungary. Factor and cluster analyses were applied for market segmentation. The question to be answered was the following: “Are there any segments in the Hungarian food market that can be aimed at by different marketing tools to promote circular systems?” The hypothesis was that well-defined segments can be separated, garnering more engagement in the circular value chain in Hungary. We could separate two clusters, in which the members’ opinions were in line with the circular economic characteristics. Summing up the features of the different clusters, we can state that the members in cluster 1 (“Information-dependent”) and cluster 3 (“Direct purchasers”) were in the most local dimension; their attitude was the most adequate for the circular economic values. The “Information-dependent” consumer in particular was remarkable from the aspect of this investigation. This study showed that highly educated young people, who are very conscious consumers and live on good incomes, may be the target group for circular innovation. These young consumers usually buy organic food, are confident internet and software users, live in cities, and follow a healthy lifestyle. Finding the right marketing tools to integrate these consumers into more sustainable circular systems effectively and to be committed to the concepts of circular consumption is an essential mission in the future. Collecting from different databases and continuously analysing consumer feedback can be a huge step towards in achieving sustainable consumption and avoiding food waste. The significance of this analysis was that we found a defined segment that represents propensity towards accepting circular economy values and can be the target group of policies integrating circular systems.
Vermicomposting using Eisenia fetida has been shown to improve phosphorus mineralization from rock phosphate (RP). There is, however, a lack of information on the potential of integrating microbial inoculants like phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) during vermicomposting as a way of improving vermidegradation, and the release of nutrients from igneous RP-amended composts. This study evaluated the potential of using Eisenia fetida and Pseudomonas fluorescence in enhancing the vermidegradation, and nutrient release in igneous RP- amended cow and pig manure-based vermicomposts at a C/N ratio of 30. Compost maturity, nutrient and phytotoxicity parameters were measured to determine vermicompost quality. Final vermicompost results showed that the pig manure treatments achieved greater maturity as indicated by lower C/N of 10.3, high humification index (HI) of 7.6%, and humification ratio (HR) of 12.89% in the treatment with E. fetida and P. fluorescence. The inclusion of E. fetida alone in cow manure treatment resulted in the highest Olsen P of 2600 mg/kg, followed by the pig manure treatment with E. fetida only (2246.15 mg/kg). In conclusion, both E. fetida and P. fluorescence are necessary in the vermicomposting of RP-enriched pig and cow manure for efficient vermi-degradation and nutrient release.
Sustainable intensification (SI) of agriculture is required to satisfy the growing populations' nutritional needs, and therefore food security while limiting negative environmental impacts. The study aims to investigate the global scientific output of sustainable intensification research from 2010 to 20 August 2021. The data was retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection and was analyzed using a bibliometric method and VOS viewer to determine the most productive countries and organizations by collaboration analysis, including the keywords to analyze the research hotspots and trends, and the most cited publications in the field. From the 1,610 studies published in the theme of sustainable agriculture by 6,346 authors belonging to 1,981 organizations and 115 countries, the study found an increased number of publications and citations in 2020, with 293 publications and 10,275 citations. The United States ranked highest in countries collaborating with the most publications in the field. The occurrence of keywords like “food security”, “climate change”, “agriculture”, “ecosystem services”, “conservation agriculture”, “Sub-Sahara Africa”, “Africa”, “biodiversity”, and “maize” in both author and all keywords (author and index) reveal the significance of sustainable intensification in Africa, as a solution to food insecurity under climate change conditions. The availability of funding agencies from big economies explains the growing interest by developing countries in the SI of agriculture research due to the growing population, food insecurity, and access to limited land for farming.
The co-application of biochar compost as organic amendment for crop production and soil remediation has gained momentum due to their positive effect on plant growth and soil quality improvement. The application of biochar and compost which are green and cost-effective soil remediators would promote the availability and distribution of food, planetary conservation, alleviate poverty, and enhance the attainment of Sustainable Millennium Development Goals (SDGs). A bibliometric analysis was conducted to overview research on biochar compost from 2011 to 2021. Two hundred and fifty-four research papers were retrieved from the Scopus database and analyzed using VOS viewer. Analysis revealed that 217 (85.43%) were articles, 21 (8.27%) were conference papers, and 12 (4.72%) were review papers. The results showed an exponential increase in the number of publications. The most productive countries in the investigated subject were China (49), followed by USA (36), Australia (29), Italy (28), Germany (25), and Indonesia (20). After the search terms, ‘soil,’ which had links with keywords like ‘soil fertility,’ ‘soil quality,’ ‘soil pollution,’ ‘phosphorus,’ ‘nitrogen,’ ‘maize,’ ‘greenhouse gas,’ etc., had the highest occurrences (94). From the results of the current hotspot research in the field, the effect of biochar-compost mixture and co-composted biochar on soil remediation is currently being studied by several researchers. Biochar and compost incorporation in soil reduce the uptake of pollutants by plants which consequently increase essential nutrients for plant and soil productivity.
Vermicomposting is being promoted as climate-smart agriculture (CSA) technology for developing organic nutrient sources that can be adopted by smallholder farmers. The amendment of soils with cost-effective and available inorganic fertilizers like rock phosphate (RP) and phosphorus-solubilizing microorganisms should also be promoted. Our study investigated the seedling and maturity growth of Swiss chard. The crop maturity study investigated the effect of amending an Oxisol soil with three phosphorus (P) sources applied at three different rates (0, 25, and 50 mg P kg−1 soil), cow and pig manures, and P-solubilizing bacteria resulting in the following treatments: control (soil), soil + RP alone, soil + RP-enriched cow manure vermicompost (VC) with phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), and soil + RP-enriched pig manure vermicompost (VP) with PSB. The study investigated the growth performance and accumulation of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) in the edible parts of Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris subsp. valgaris var. Cicla). The seedlings were grown using pine bark compost and the three P sources (VC, VP, and RP) at five different application rates (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%). The results revealed that the use of 50 mg P kg−1 as VP gave the highest fresh weight of 39.78 g, leaf area of 240.41 cm2, and a total P in tissues of 326.91 mg kg−1 at 8 weeks after transplanting. The 50 mg P kg−1 application as VC resulted in a higher Zn content of 8.50 mg kg−1, which was above the permissible level. These results suggest that the best treatment mixture for establishing fully matured Swiss chard was the 50 mg P kg−1 as VP. Therefore, pig manure vermicompost that has been inoculated with phosphorus-solubilizing microorganisms is a promising CSA technology that can improve organic vegetable production by smallholder farmers.
