This paper investigates the effect of corporate governance quality on earnings management in Jordan. Using a panel data set of all industrial and service firms listed on Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) during the period 2009-2013; this paper provides evidence that earnings management is affected negatively by corporate governance quality. In particular; the results show that earnings management is affected negatively by overall categories of governance index represented by board of director, board meeting, Audit and nomination and compensation committee. Furthermore, results suggest that corporate governance quality has increased over time. Thus, its ability to constrain earnings management has also increased. It is recommended to industrial and service companies to boost their compliance with corporate governance code to improve the integrity and reliability of financial reports. Purpose This study aims to investigate the effect of intellectual capital components on firms’ performance, and also examines the influence of the mediating role of family management on such a relationship. Design/methodology/approach The hypotheses are tested using structural equation modeling for a sample of 46 Jordanian service listed firms during 2014–2019. Findings The results indicate that intellectual capital efficiency is a key factor that enables firms to achieve higher financial performance and higher market value. Human capital efficiency has a significant positive effect on firms’ profitability as measured by return on assets and earnings per share. No evidence is shown to support that family management has a mediating role on the relationship between intellectual capital and firms’ performance. Practical implications The results indicate strong evidence of the important role of intellectual capital on firm performance. Accordingly, this study recommends that the managers of service firms should continue to enhance and improve the components of intellectual capital, especially investing more in the competencies and capabilities of employees, including their skills, education and training programs to achieve competitive advantage and ensure continued success in the future, and investors to pay special attention to the components of intellectual capital to predict the performance of the firm and be able to choose the best investment opportunities. Originality/value This study provides additional insights into the literature of both intellectual capital and family businesses by analyzing data from an emerging market.
This study focused on scrutinizing the influence of Enterprises Risk Management (ERM) on firm performance with a mediating role of Business Model Innovation (BMI). For the purpose, data from 228 Jordanian firms was collected and analyzed. The results indicated that the ERM practices have a significant influence on BMI and financial firm’s performance. The BMI significantly contributed to the financial and nonfinancial performance, whereas it displayed insignificant effects regarding environmental performance. The BMI fully mediated the relationship between ERM practices and financial performance, where a partial mediating effect was observed for the path between ERM practices and nonfinancial performance, while showed no mediating role between the ERM practices and environmental performance. Economies of countries like Jordan are hereby urged to implement the formal ERM practices and to financially educate their top management teams to apply the BMI to gain first-rate performance. This study also encourages the researchers from other countries to extend this model to their economies to unleash useful insights.
This study has two main objectives. The first is to examine the impact of Earnings Management (EM) on dividend policy for the Kuwait’s industrial and service sectors. The second is to sieve out the possible explanations for the conflicting results regarding this topic. Using Modified Jones Model, a sample of 46 companies listed on the Kuwait Stock Exchange with a total of (184) firm-year observations form the period 2011-2016 reveals an absence of a significant relation between EM and dividend policy. In addition, this paper posits a possible relationship between EM, dividend policy and market maturity.
Problem statement:This study aims at evaluating corresponding banks in Jordan. Characterizing the goals, instruments and profitability under unfavorable conditions of financial setbacks and unfair competition among banks. Focuses on the feasibility and profitability of Philadelphia Investment Bank in its international trade via its Correspondent banks. Approach: Problems and setbacks shall be screened out; reasoned and appropriate optimal recommendations are to be presented. Results: The study followed the analytical approach and depended on "History Documents" and "In depth Interview" techniques and puts a major emphasis on the fact that correspondent banking has become an essential cornerstone of international business amid the new era of world trade, globalization, external competition and cartels from the major opponents to Jordanian Banks, the main conclusion is realized the importance of correspondent banks in the international trade, so Philadelphia bank benefited from correspondent banks for the cheap cost of market entry and services were tailored to the scale of required locale. But there was no big investment in staff facilities. And there are setbacks in dealing with correspondent banks, such as fund delay in reaching destinations on time. Moreover, Jordanian banks have suffered in general from these correspondent banks because they deal with these correspondent banks individually. Conclusion/Recommendations: The recommendation of the study is, it is the time to consider solidification and forming one financial block, or a sort of cartel and face these correspondent banks in one unit. They are also called for developing collective strategies. Small banks should merge and form huge capital blocks. Another strategy is that Jordanian banks should minimize the reliance on foreign banks and should develop their own, by establishing international branches abroad to help financing their international activities.
