Abstract. The optimal control of a mechanical system is of crucial importance in many application areas. Typical examples are the determination of a time-minimal path in vehicle dynamics, a minimal energy trajectory in space mission design, or optimal motion sequences in robotics and biomechanics. In most cases, some sort of discretization of the original, infinite-dimensional optimization problem has to be performed in order to make the problem amenable to computations. The approach proposed in this paper is to directly discretize the variational description of the system's motion. The resulting optimization algorithm lets the discrete solution directly inherit characteristic structural properties from the continuous one like symmetries and integrals of the motion. We show that the DMOC (Discrete Mechanics and Optimal Control) approach is equivalent to a finite difference discretization of Hamilton's equations by a symplectic partitioned Runge-Kutta scheme and employ this fact in order to give a proof of convergence. The numerical performance of DMOC and its relationship to other existing optimal control methods are investigated.Mathematics Subject Classification. 49M25, 49N99, 65K10.

A new approach to the solution of optimal control problems for mechanical systems is proposed. It is based on a direct discretization of the Lagrange-d'Alembert principle for the system (as opposed to using, for example, collocation or multiple shooting to enforce the equations of motion as constraints). The resulting forced discrete Euler-Lagrange equations then serve as constraints for the optimization of a given cost functional. We numerically illustrate the method by optimizing a low thrust satellite orbit transfer as well as the reconfiguration of a group of hovercraft in the plane.

SUMMARYThe equations of motion of a controlled mechanical system subject to holonomic constraints may be formulated in terms of the states and controls by applying a constrained version of the Lagrange-d'Alembert principle. This paper derives a structure-preserving scheme for the optimal control of such systems using, as one of the key ingredients, a discrete analogue of that principle. This property is inherited when the system is reduced to its minimal dimension by the discrete null space method. Together with initial and final conditions on the configuration and conjugate momentum, the reduced discrete equations serve as nonlinear equality constraints for the minimization of a given objective functional. The algorithm yields a sequence of discrete configurations together with a sequence of actuating forces, optimally guiding the system from the initial to the desired final state. In particular, for the optimal control of multibody systems, a force formulation consistent with the joint constraints is introduced. This enables one to prove the consistency of the evolution of momentum maps. Using a two-link pendulum, the method is compared with existing methods. Further, it is applied to a satellite reorientation maneuver and a biomotion problem.

The increased deployment of intermittent renewable energy generators opens up opportunities for gridconnected energy storage. Batteries offer significant flexibility but are relatively expensive at present. Battery lifetime is a key factor in the business case, and it depends on usage, but most techno-economic analyses do not account for this. For the first time, this paper quantifies the annual benefits of grid-connected batteries including realistic physical dynamics and nonlinear electrochemical degradation. Three lithium-ion battery models of increasing realism are formulated, and the predicted degradation of each is compared with a large-scale experimental degradation data set (Mat4Bat). A respective improvement in RMS capacity prediction error from 11% to 5% is found by increasing the model accuracy. The three models are then used within an optimal control algorithm to perform price arbitrage over one year, including degradation.Results show that the revenue can be increased substantially while degradation can be reduced by using more realistic models. The estimated best case profit using a sophisticated model is a 175% improvement compared with the simplest model. This illustrates that using a simplistic battery model in a technoeconomic assessment of grid-connected batteries might substantially underestimate the business case and lead to erroneous conclusions.

In this work we derive and analyze variational integrators of higher order for the structure-preserving simulation of mechanical systems. The construction is based on a space of polynomials together with Gauss and Lobatto quadrature rules to approximate the relevant integrals in the variational principle. The use of higher order schemes increases the accuracy of the discrete solution and thereby decrease the computational cost while the preservation properties of the scheme are still guaranteed. The order of convergence of the resulting variational integrators are investigated numerically and it is discussed which combination of space of polynomials and quadrature rules provide optimal convergence rates. For particular integrators the order can be increased compared to the Galerkin variational integrators previously introduced in [MW01]. The goal of this paper is to derive a structure preserving integrator for geometrically exact beam dynamics, by using a Lie group variational integrator. Both spatial and temporal discretization are implemented in a geometry preserving manner. The resulting scheme preserves both the discrete momentum maps and symplectic structures, and exhibits almost-perfect energy conservation. Comparisons with existing numerical schemes are provided and the convergence behavior is analyzed numerically.
