In diesem Beitrag wird argumentiert, dass der Heterogenität unterschiedlicher Beziehungsformen des Peerkontextes zu wenig Aufmerksamkeit zukommt. Der Fokus in als Peer-Studien deklarierten Untersuchungen liegt einerseits oft ausschließlich auf Freundschaftsbeziehungen. Andererseits liegt hierbei der Schwerpunkt wiederum häufig auf besten FreundInnen. Deshalb besteht die Gefahr, dass die Begriffe Peers und FreundInnen zunehmend verschwimmen und der Amorphität des Freundschaftsbegriffes sowie der Unterschiedlichkeit von Freundschaftsbeziehungen zu wenig Beachtung zukommt. Auf Basis von 30 Leitfadeninterviews, die mit Hilfe von strukturierenden qualitativen Inhaltsanalysen ausgewertet wurden, kann gezeigt werden, dass Freundschaft ein multidimensionales Konzept ist, wobei die Wichtigkeit einzelner Dimensionen personenspezifisch höchst unterschiedlich wahrgenommen wird. Enge FreundInnen haben für alle befragten Personen einen sehr hohen Stellenwert, sollten aber im Vergleich zu sowohl weniger engen FreundInnen als auch anderen interpersonalen Beziehungen nicht ausschließlich aufgrund der Beziehungsstärke, sondern vorwiegend oder zumindest auch anhand der Funktionalität betrachtet werden, da diese situativ unterschiedlich wichtig sein kann.
