Background:Intra-abdominal adhesions after surgery are usually in the form of bands and can annoy the patient throughout life causing repeated surgical procedures. Therefore, any action to prevent adhesions after surgery can increase longevity and quality of life. For this aim, this study investigates the effect of streptokinase and normal saline on the 7th day and 1 month after laparotomy.Materials and Methods:Experimental study was conducted on thirty healthy male Wistar rats weighing 200–250 g with age of 3 months divided into three groups of 10. Group I: No treatment, Group II: Received normal saline, and Group III: Received normal saline and streptokinase at the same time. One week and 1 month after laparotomy, the frequency of the presence or absence of adhesion bands was performed by a person who was unaware of the sample grouping. The collected information was analyzed with the SPSS software (version 16; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA).Results:Adhesion frequency was found to be 20% on the 7th day (early) and 1 month after laparotomy (late) for Group 1, and it was 40% on early and late for Group II, while 0% on the early and late for Group III. Hence, in the group receiving streptokinase, no early or late adhesion was observed; therefore, it had a significant role in the prevention of intra-abdominal adhesions (P < 0.05). However, adhesions in the group receiving normal saline had no remarkable difference with the group receiving no drug (P > 0.05).Conclusion:According to the results of our study, we believe that streptokinase could be a good antiadhesive agent considering its effectiveness.
Background: It has been identified that Auricular acupuncture can be a possible method for modulating appetite and suggested as a cost-effective procedure to current treatments of obesity. This study aimed to investigate the effect of auricular acupuncture on appetite. Materials and Methods: This study has been carried out on 40 healthy individuals. The sample was assigned randomly by using announcement placed in Isfahan medical school, in the form of face to face or by e-mail. After recording primary appetite scores, no acupuncture was used for control group but only on Tragus point in ear, it has placed a fake tape. Acupuncture medicine was applied for another group and following to cleaning the ear, based on acupuncture medicine, needles were applied on Tragus point through "press needle" method and left in the place for 24 hours. Then, for the second time, we asked participants to fill out hunger VAS forms and the results were recorded. Afterwards needles and tapes were picked. Results: There was no significant difference in appetite scores between the two groups at baseline and pre-intervention (P value>0.05). But a significant reduction was seen in pleasure to food and hungry feeling in acupuncture group (P value<0.001).Conversely, satiety feeling and eating ability show no significant impact in this respect (P value>0.05). In control group, no appetite-related factors had shown a significant change after intervention (P value>0.05). Conclusions: Auricular acupuncture may reduce pleasure to food and hungry feeling but these results suggest that larger studies of acupuncture and appetite are warranted.
Background:Multiple sclerosis may have profound emotional consequences. The relation between psychological and physical factors could lead patients toward unforeseen disease. This study focuses on multiple sclerosis (MS) disease duration on personality type A and B in relation to individuals’ behaviors.Materials and Methods:This descriptive-analytical study was conducted in Isfahan Alzahra hospital in 2013. Three hundred MS patients and 100 healthy individuals were determined. The distributed questionnaires related to MS patients and considering the descriptive statistics such as demographic variables. Data were analyzed by SPSS software (version 18) based on Chi-square test and independent T-test.Results:Disease duration varied between 1 to 38 years: 30% (1-4 years), 38% (5-10 years), 20% (10-20 years), and 12% (more than 20 years). Significant relationship was observed between disease duration and tendency to type A (higher stress). This relation was positive and significant in Relapsing Remitting MS patients; but negative correlation was seen in Secondary Progressive MS patients. These patients tended to type B (lower stress) when disease duration increased. Conclusions:Individuals with disease duration of one year and less than one year tend to type A personality, while patients with increment of disease duration have tendency to type B.
