A Odontologia Hospitalar consiste na atuação do profissional dentista na área hospitalar. Esse serviço a cada dia vem sendo implementado no sentido de contribuir com a melhora da saúde geral e qualidade de vida dos pacientes hospitalizados, pois os mesmos apresentam grandes possiblidades de contração de doenças infecciosas, cardíacas, pulmonares, que, além de prejudicar a saúde bucal, pode comprometer outros órgãos e agravar o quadro. O presente trabalho objetiva analisar através de revisão de literatura a importância da Odontologia Hospitalar na redução dos riscos de doenças infecciosas em pacientes hospitalizados, para tanto se utilizou a pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa, de caráter exploratório e os procedimentos de pesquisa bibliográfica. O estudo considerou que a Odontologia Hospitalar apresenta-se com fundamental importância para a minimização dos processos infecciosos, principalmente em paciente com longa permanência de internação. Nesse sentido o profissional cirurgião dentista tem várias frentes de atuação, dentro de um hospital que vai desde aos exames simples, identificação de diagnósticos até o desenvolvimento de protocolos para os tratamentos sistêmicos da cavidade bucal. Assim, sendo que esse profissional também auxilia os demais profissionais de saúde a realizarem um trabalho eficiente com os pacientes que estão na unidade de terapia intensiva (UTI).
