Un projet de Film d'Arte italien avant l'heure Le 18 mars 1909, le Bulletin officiel des sociétés par actions d'Italie 1 annonce la création de la Film d'Arte Italiana, une société anonyme par actions sise à Rome, via S. Nicolò da Tolentino, 78 2. Cette nouvelle société cinématographique a été créée quelques jours auparavant, le 2 mars, par dépôt légal des statuts et de l'acte constitutif au cabinet florentin de M e Tamburini, avocat, par-devant Maître Luigi Pierattini, notaire. La rédaction des statuts laisse d'emblée apparaître quelques particularités de la toute nouvelle société cinématographique. Elle met l'accent en particulier sur la vocation « artistique » de la société, sur ses liens étroits avec son homonyme française, la société Le Film d'Art, et enfin sur sa relation de dépendance avec Pathé Frères pour la production et la commercialisation. La Film d'Arte Italiana (F.A.I.), dont le but premier est la réalisation de films historiques ou tirés d'oeuvres littéraires et théâtrales, constitue le premier exemple, en Italie, de collaboration italo-française dans une société cinématographique. Autre caractéristique propre à la F.A.I., la présence de grands noms de l'aristocratie, aussi bien parmi les membres du conseil d'administration que parmi les principaux actionnaires. Certes novatrices, ces particularités n'en sont pas pour autant totalement inédites dans le panorama cinématographique italien.
