ABSTRACT. Neotropical Meliponini: the genus Ptilotrigona Moure, (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Apinae). The Neotropical stingless bees genus Ptilotrigona Moure, 1951 is revised. Three species are recognized: Ptilotrigona occidentalis (Schulz, 1904), endemic to NW South America -from NW Ecuador to southern Darién -, and with one isolated population in Osa Peninsula -Costa Rica; P. pereneae (Schwarz, 1943), endemic to the western Amazon; and P. lurida (Smith, 1854), largely distributed in the Amazon region. Ptilotrigona lurida and P. pereneae are the only known stingless bees that store pollen in association with yeasts (Candida sp.) and produce little or no honey.
Three new species of Celetrigona are described: C. euclydiana sp. nov., from Acre, Brazil, C. hirsuticornis sp. nov., from Rondônia, Brazil and C. manauara sp. nov., from the northern Amazon. Additional geographic records are provided for C. longicornis (Friese, 1903), the only previously known species; its nest and the male are described and illustrated for the first time. Diagnosis and an identification key for species are provided, which are distinguished by the pattern of pilosity on the antenna.
Two new species of Leurotrigona are described: L. crispula sp. nov., from the Magdalena River valley, Antioquia, Colombia, and L. gracilis sp. nov., from western Amazon. Additional geographic records and illustrations are provided for L. muelleri (Friese) and L. pusilla Camargo & Moure, as well as an identification key to the species of the genus. Species can be recognized mainly by pilosity on the face. Morphological characters, including shape of the head and tibia III of the workers, and genitalia and pre-genital sterna of the male are indicative of two distinct groups, one composed of L. muelleri and L. gracilis sp. nov. and the other, of L. pusilla and L. crispula sp. nov.
