The idea that mutuality is effective in nurse-patient relationships is pivotal in nursing and leads to more compassionate and egalitarian care (Brown, 2016). Mutuality, defined as a form of social cooperation based on mutual protection and assistance, is a reciprocal relationship between two or more people, groups, or institutions (Brown, 2016). In the last 30 years, a large and growing international literature on mutuality has developed (Pucciarelli et al., 2021).Mutuality in the relationship between nurses and patients has been previously defined as 'high levels of empathy, collaboration, equality and interdependence' (Jeon, 2004, p. 128).
