A través de este artículo, daremos cuenta de la trayectoria de los distribuidores y exhibidores José y Rafael Calderón, provenientes del estado de Chihuahua, al norte de México, en un interés por indagar acerca de los cines regionales y transnacionales en dicho país. Partiremos de una problemática en torno a la relevancia que los estudios sobre cine han dado a los fenómenos asociados a los centros geoculturales, que en este caso nos remiten a la ciudad de México. En base a ello, evidenciaremos que aunque durante los últimos años se ha avanzado en torno a esta perspectiva historiográfica en diversas publicaciones sobre cine regional y transnacional, la figura de estos empresarios norteños ha sido usualmente omitida, aun a pesar de la gran influencia que tuvieron para el desarrollo de la industria cinematográfica mexicana en general, y de los vínculos transnacionales establecidos con Estados Unidos por medio de la fundación de salas y la distribución de cine mexicano en aquel país.
El objetivo de este artículo es efectuar un acercamiento al trabajo realizado por el exhibidor y distribuidor José U. Calderón como plataforma inicial para la producción de cine mexicano emprendida posteriormente por intermedio de sus hijos (Pedro, José Luis y Guillermo), y que se extendería a lo largo de las décadas. Para tal fin, daremos cuenta de la fundación de la empresa Azteca Films, Inc. (dedicada a la exhibición de cine mexicano en Estados Unidos) y de la cadena de salas cinematográficas ubicada en ciudades a ambos lados de la frontera México-Estados Unidos, destacando su correspondiente relevancia para el desarrollo regional e internacional de la cinematografía mexicana. Encontramos que la labor de Calderón en la industria del cine mexicano, teniendo en cuenta su rol como difusor por fuera del territorio nacional, ha sido de gran importancia en la historia del cine de dicho país. Ante las pocas referencias historiográficas acerca de su rol empresarial, este artículo se propone entonces hacer una aproximación para cubrir ese vacío de información. El análisis se realizará conectando la noción de transnacionalidad al avance de dichos emprendimientos industriales, enmarcando al cine mexicano en sus primeras décadas de desarrollo en torno a una búsqueda que excede los límites estrictamente nacionales.
Este artículo analizará una serie de films mexicanos provenientes del género del terror, que fueron lanzados entre las décadas del 50 y 60 y explotaron la popularidad a la que estaban accediendo por aquel tiempo esta clase de producciones, en tanto el cine industrial de dicho país experimentaba el cese de su masificación en la región latinoamericana. Partiremos de un estudio comparativo de la estructura de personajes de El hombre que logró ser invisible (Alfredo B. Crevenna, 1958), La horripilante bestia humana (René Cardona, 1969) y La señora Muerte (Jaime Salvador, 1969), las dos primeras producidas por Cinematográfica Calderón, y la última por Fílmica Vergara. Delinearemos, a través de ellos, el interés por manifestar los límites difusos entre lo monstruoso y lo humano, por medio de la representación del prototipo del científico «loco», y sus planes macabros de dominación.
Este artículo se propone analizar tres largometrajes documentales mexicanos lanzados en los últimos años que tienen en común su interés por forjar, a través del formato audiovisual, una memoria sobre la historia del cine de aquel país, y en torno a ello, sobre las microhistorias doméstico-familiares que involucran personalmente a sus realizadores, restituyendo ciertos aspectos sobre ese tópico en particular que incluyen tanto la reivindicación de la cultura popular como la proyección de experiencias privadas sobre dicha construcción. Aquellos films, Perdida (Viviana García Besné, 2009), La historia negra del cine mexicano (Andrés García Franco, 2016) y Bellas de noche (María José Cuevas, 2016), se destacaron por relatar algunas particularidades históricas del cine en contraste con lo que se ha tendido a llamar cine de arte o cine de autor, y vienen a recomponer y actualizar, por fuera de la disciplina historiográfica tradicional, aquellos fenómenos cinematográficos menospreciados por sus rasgos populares o, en ciertos casos, por su carácter controversial.
