Testes de toxicidade podem ser definidos como o uso de procedimentos para testar respostas biológicas. Consistem basicamente em submeter organismos a diferentes condições. Ele tenta simular o ambiente natural e visa constatar seus efeitos positivos e negativos. O teste de toxicidade para invertebrados aquáticos desempenha um papel importante na determinação do impacto ambiental dos produtos químicos. Ao final do ano de 2019, o mundo se deparou com o primeiro caso de infecção por SARS-CoV-2, um vírus da família Coronaviridae, capaz de causar a doença do coronavírus (COVID-19). Onde cientistas e autoridades sanitárias fizeram uma ampla divulgação e fortalecimento em 2020 sobre a importância dos cuidados sanitários em locais públicos e privados, dentre as substâncias químicas para a desinfecção e higienização para conter o vírus estão o álcool gel e a água sanitária. O organismo-teste é um pequeno microcrustáceo que vive em água doce e vem sendo muito utilizado como bioindicador em pesquisas científicas. O método de pesquisa consistiu em expor os neonatos de Daphnia magna à amostra (qualitativa) ou a várias diluições da amostra (quantitativa) por 24h. e 48 horas. A análise de dados dos valores de CE50, concentração efetiva mediana que causa efeito agudo a 50% dos organismos no tempo de exposição e foram calculados usando Análise Probit, cujas análises foram realizadas com o software BIOESTAT® 2008. Regressão linear também foi usada utilizando o programa Prism. Conclui-se que as substâncias utilizadas no combate ao Covid-19, álcool gel e água sanitária tem efeitos sub-letais e letais aos organismos do cladócero Daphnia magna.
