En Colombia, la prevalencia de ansiedad y depresión en jóvenes es de 19,7% y 52,9%, respectivamente, lo que converge con los resultados de la investigación Papel del ejercicio físico en el funcionamiento neurocognitivo de estudiantes universitarios, que permitió dar cuenta de que en una muestra de 143 estudiantes universitarios que practicaban actividad física, el 27.26% tenían depresión y el 56.62% tenían ansiedad en grados leve y severo. De esta manera, el objetivo del presente trabajo es reflexionar en torno a una revisión de la literatura científica relacionada con los trastornos del estado de ánimo y la actividad física en estudiantes universitarios. Se concluye que, tradicionalmente, se ha planteado que realizar actividad física favorece el incremento de los niveles de salud mental, pero debe ser considerada la existencia de otros factores que influyen significativamente en este fenómeno.
