O Projeto "Criação da Biblioteca Digital Linhares", elaborado por pesquisadores da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais - UFMG, teve como objetivo conceber e implementar metodologia para preservar e dar acesso à Coleção Linhares, constituída por jornais, revistas e panfletos publicados em Belo Horizonte e colecionados por Joaquim Nabuco Linhares desde 1895, até a sua morte em 1945. Foi adquirida a preço simbólico pela UFMG, em 1976, e depositada na Biblioteca Universitária da UFMG. A coleção, considerada de grande importância para a história da imprensa de Belo Horizonte, se encontrava em acelerado processo de deterioração. A biblioteca digital foi construída com base na proposta metodológica do processo híbrido, que preconiza a utilização da microfilmagem para preservar o acervo e a digitalização, via microfilme, para proporcionar o acesso. O projeto foi desenvolvido de forma colaborativa, envolvendo pesquisadores e servidores da Escola de Ciência da Informação, do Departamento de História e da Biblioteca Universitária da UFMG.
