Medicamentos potencialmente inapropriados (MPI) são aqueles que oferecem um risco maior de efeitos adversos superior aos benefícios que podem oferecer ao idoso. Estes medicamentos ainda apresentam uma alta taxa de prescrição mesmo havendo muitas evidências dos resultados negativos que podem oferecer. Perante a necessidade de se reestruturar o sistema de saúde, para atender à crescente população de idosos, e diante do impacto que os medicamentos potencialmente inapropriados podem causar, estudos envolvendo o uso desses medicamentos por essa população são de grande relevância para a sociedade civil e científica. O conhecimento sobre o assunto pode contribuir para o desenvolvimento de novos protocolos de atendimento e segurança do paciente idoso. Destaca-se que esta temática é de extrema relevância para o setor de saúde pública, para a melhoria da qualidade de vida e segurança dos idosos. Assim, monitorar o uso de MPI para idosos é uma importante estratégia, pois a prescrição apropriada constitui-se em um dos fatores mais relevantes para o uso racional dos medicamentos, fazendo-se necessário, aos profissionais de saúde, conhecer e analisar o perfil farmacoterapêutico dos idosos quanto ao uso desses medicamentos.Cuida
