:Unmet need for family planning is the key indicator to achieve Millennium Development Goal by the year 2015. Bangladesh Government has a great success in family planning sector but population has almost doubled in recent years. This study was carried out among married women to compare the determinants of unmet need for family planning among rural and urban communities during the period from July 2010 to June 2011. Unmet need for family planning in rural community was found 18(12%) and in urban community it was 38(25.3%). Among rural women unmet need for limiter was 13(8.6%) and spacer was 5(3.4%) while limiter 29(19.4%) and spacer 9(5.9%) found among urban women. Mean age at marriage was found 17.97(SD±2.66) years and mean age at first child birth was 19.91(SD±2.71) years among rural women. Among urban women mean age at marriage was found 20.43(SD±4.08) years and mean age at first child birth was 22.55(SD±4.3) years. Current contraceptive users among rural women was 79(52.7%) while it was 61(40.7%) among urban women. In this study, association between unmet need for family planning and freedom of choice of contraceptives was highly significant (p=0.001). To increase contraceptive prevalence rate and reduction of unplanned pregnancy, more emphasis should be given on unmet need for family planning.
Momordica subangulata Blume subsp. renigera (G. Don) de Wilde is an important vegetable in India. In June 2015, blossom blight symptoms of Momordica subangulata subsp. renigera was first time noticed in the experimental plot of Directorate of Research, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Kalyani, West Bengal, India. The disease severity ranged from 10-30% and the disease infection was also recorded from several other districts of West Bengal, India. The disease is caused by zygomycetous fungi, Choanephora infundibulifera (Currey) sacc. is the main causal organism of blossom blight disease. The temperature 28-30°C with high humidity (70-90%) prevalent during the rainy season (June-November) favoured the disease development. This is the first report of blossom blight of Momordica subangulata subsp. renigera caused by Choanephora infundibulifera.
An experiment was conducted during the rabi season of 2012-13 and 2013-14 at Instructional Farm, Jaguli, Nadia, West Bengal to find out the different doses of nitrogen and potassium on growth and yield of potato. The experiment was designed in RBD with 10 treatments replicated thrice in potato cultivated variety Kufri Jyoti. Different doses of nitrogen and potassium were considered as treatments. For all the treatments P2O5 dose was 150 kg ha-1. The size of the experimental plots were 12 square meter and seed tubers were planted with 50 cm X 20 cm spacing. In this experiment, it was observed that the growth attributes like plant height, leaf area index, dry matter accumulation of tubers at 80 DAP, crop growth rate at 60-80 DAP were highest with the application of 250 kg ha-1 N, 200 kg K2O (T9) and statistically at par with 300 kg ha-1 N, 150 kg ha-1 K2O (T10). Again among the yield parameters, T9 recorded the highest tuber number per square meter and tuber yield which was closely followed by T10. Highest B:C ratio was also observed in T9.This result proves that T9 can be recommended to get better growth and economic yield of potato than T10 (farmer practice does) in the new alluvial soil of West Bengal.
The present report describes Choanephora infundibulifera as causal pathogen of twig blight of Pisum sativum recorded from the Gangetic alluvial region of West Bengal, India. Severe disease infestation with the initiation of shoot apical meristem, leaf and blossom blight was observed. The monsoon season (June-September) with optimum temperature (28-30°C) and high moisture (80-90%) level was found to enhance the disease progress. The pathogen was identified based on its cultural, morphological, and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) -r DNA sequence analysis. To our understanding, this pathogen is being described for the first time as causal agent of twig blight disease of pea in India.
