SummaryDespite sustained efforts for its control made over the past 50+ years, the re-emergence of schistosomiasis in China was noted around the turn of the new millennium. Consequently, a new integrated strategy was proposed to stop the contamination of schistosome eggs to the environment, which emphasizes health education, access to clean water and adequate sanitation, mechanization of agriculture and fencing of water buffaloes, along with chemotherapy. Validation of this integrated control strategy in four pilot counties in the provinces of Anhui, Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi revealed significant reductions in the rate of Schistosoma japonicum infection in humans and intermediate host snails. Importantly, this strategy showed an impact on diseases beyond schistosomiasis, signified by concomitant reductions in the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminth infections. In view of China's new integrated strategy for transmission control of schistosomiasis showing an ancillary benefit on other helminthic diseases, we encourage others to investigate the scope and limits of integrated control of neglected tropical diseases.

BackgroundSchistosomiasis remains an important public health issue in China and worldwide. Oncomelania hupensis is the unique intermediate host of schistosoma japonicum, and its change influences the distribution of S. japonica. The Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has substantially changed the ecology and environment in the Dongting Lake region. This study investigated the impact of water level and elevation on the survival and habitat of the snails.MethodsData were collected for 16 bottomlands around 4 hydrological stations, which included water, density of living snails (form the Anxiang Station for Schistosomiasis Control) and elevation (from Google Earth). Based on the elevation, sixteen bottomlands were divided into 3 groups. ARIMA models were built to predict the density of living snails in different elevation areas.ResultsBefore closure of TGD, 7 out of 9 years had a water level beyond the warning level at least once at Anxiang hydrological station, compared with only 3 out of 10 years after closure of TGD. There were two severe droughts that happened in 2006 and 2011, with much fewer number of flooding per year compared with other study years. Overall, there was a correlation between water level changing and density of living snails variation in all the elevations areas. The density of living snails in all elevations areas was decreasing after the TGD was built. The relationship between number of flooding per year and the density of living snails was more pronounced in the medium and high elevation areas; the density of living snails kept decreasing from 2003 to 2014. In low elevation area however, the density of living snails decreased after 2003 first and turned to increase after 2011. Our ARIMA prediction models indicated that the snails would not disappear in the Dongting Lake region in the next 7 years. In the low elevation area, the density of living snails would increase slightly, and then stabilize after the year 2017. In the medium elevation region, the change of the density of living snails would be more obvious and would increase till the year 2020. In the high elevation area, the density of living snails would remain stable after the year 2015.ConclusionThe TGD influenced water levels and reduced the risk of flooding and the density of living snails in the study region. Based on our prediction models, the density of living snails in all elevations tends to be stabilized. Control of S. japonica would continue to be an important task in the study area in the coming decade.

Although non‐native species can modify ecosystem function, their effects in southern China have not been investigated, despite their ecological importance. This study assessed how Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.) invasions impact the functional patterns of fish communities in the large subtropical Pearl River by analysing the relationships between invasion and body size over a 9‐year period. The relative abundance of Nile tilapia increased significantly over time. In particular, the established Nile tilapia significantly undermined the relative densities and the body size of the native fishes. Importantly, this study provided empirical evidence that functional indices (such as body size) are more sensitive when evaluating the effects of non‐native species on a community than richness. Understanding processes such as those should be the basis of controlling alien fish species and fisheries management in the Pearl River.

Individual specialization and high plasticity in feeding activity are common in natural populations. However, the role of these two in intraspecific competition is unclear. In this study, the rhythm of feeding activity, dietary composition, niche width, niche overlap, and individual specialization was explored in four different size groups of black amur bream (Megalobrama terminalis), using microscopic identification of foregut contents and stable isotope analysis (δ13C and δ15N) of dorsal muscle. Both methods observed ontogenetic shifts in dietary preference and individual specializations, and revealed that the total niche width of large individuals was greater than small individuals. Mixed linear models indicated that feeding activity was significantly influenced by time (p < 0.0001), and no significant changes among size groups was evident (p = 0.244). Niche overlaps revealed that there was intensive diet competition between different size groups of black amur bream. Individual specialization in small juveniles was likely to be stronger than sub-adult and adult groups. Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed that the individual specialization was positively correlated with mean diet similarity within a group. The results indicated that intraspecific competition is reduced mainly by individual dietary specialization, rather than shift in feeding activity.

The Oasis-desert ecotone plays an important role in ensuring oasis ecological security. This study was to determine the main factors on the changes of desert vegetation in the oasis-desert ecotone, and to understand the mechanisms of the long-term changes. During past 50 years, the dominant plant species of Tamarix-vegetation in the Minqin oasis-desert ecotone changed from mesophytes to xerophytes and finally to super-xerophytes. The vegetative distribution area (belt width of Tamarix-vegetation between desert and oasis) markedly decreased from 1,000 m past to 30 m current. The coverage of Tamarix bushes reduced from 25 to 7%. The importance value (IV) of the bushes fell from 0.957 to 0.752, and Simpson index decreased from 0.702 in 1959-0.589 in 1992, and then increased to 0.712 in 2002. These changes in vegetation were closely related with the rapid decrease of groundwater table and the reduction of soil moisture due to unsustainable use of water resources for expanded agriculture development. These findings suggested that the change of Tamarixvegetation in the oasis-desert ecotone was a process of vegetation degradation and concurrent desertification. The maintaining of stable groundwater and Tamarix-vegetation is a vital prerequisite for dryland management, especially, conserving ecological health of oasis-desert systems.
