PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify the supply chain management enablers (SCMEs) and establish relationships among them using interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and find out driving and dependence power of enablers, using fuzzy MICMAC (Matriced' Impacts Croisés Multiplication Appliquée á un Classement) analysis.Design/methodology/approachA group of experts from industries and academics was consulted and ISM is used to develop the contextual relationship among various SCMEs for each dimension of SCM implementation. The results of ISM are used as an input to fuzzy MICMAC analysis, to identify the driving and dependence power of SCMEs.FindingsThis paper has identified 24 key SCMEs and developed an integrated model using ISM and the fuzzy MICMAC approach, which is helpful to identify and classify the important SCMEs and reveal the direct and indirect effects of each SCME on the SCM implementation. The integrated approach is developed, since the ISM model provides only binary relationship among SCMEs, while fuzzy MICMAC analysis provides precise analysis related to driving and dependence power of SCMEs.Research limitations/implicationsThe weightage for ISM model development and fuzzy MICMAC are obtained through the judgment of academicians and a few industry experts. It is only subjective judgment and any biasing by the person who is judging the SCMEs might influence the final result. A questionnaire survey can be conducted to catch the insight on these SCMEs from more organizations.Practical implicationsThis study has strong practical implications, for both practitioners as well as academicians. The practitioners need to concentrate on identified SCMEs more cautiously during SCM implementation in their organizations and the top management could formulate strategy for implementing these enablers obtained through ISM and fuzzy MICMAC analysis.Originality/valueThis is first kind of study to identify 24 SCMEs and further, to deploy ISM and fuzzy MICMAC to identify and classify the key SCMEs that influence SCM implementation in the organization.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically test a framework which identifies the relationships between various supply chain practices (SCPs) and organizational performance (operational performance (OP), customer satisfaction, and financial performance) in the context of Indian manufacturing organizations. Design/methodology/approach From the literature, ten SCPs are selected which finally influences the organizational performance. In order to understand the interactions between SCPs and organizational performance, this paper grouped the ten SCPs into four constructs namely: information and communication technology, supply chain (SC) integration, operational responsiveness, and closed loop green practices. Three levels of firm performance are also examined, including OP, customer satisfaction, and financial performance. The paper-based and web-based survey yielded 292 responses from the Indian manufacturing organizations. The data collected were put through rigorous statistical analysis to test for the content, construct, and criterion-related validity, as well as reliability analyses. Further a structural equation model was developed to test the relationships between SCPs and organizational performance. Findings The finding suggests that a successful SCPs implementation not only improves the OP, but also enhances customer satisfaction and financial performance. In addition, higher financial performance is also attributable to better customer value resulting from the achievement of better customer satisfaction. Research limitations/implications SCPs are complex constructs. While this study shows the effect of broadly accepted SCPs on organizational performance, not all possible practices are covered in this study. Again the study can be further extended to sector specific so that the results can be further refined. Practical implications This is one of the few studies which attempts to investigate whether there is any relationship exits between SCPs and organizational performance. The finding will help decision makers in the organization to know the importance of SCPs and how SCPs influence the organizational performance. Second, this study has developed and validated a multi-dimensional construct of SCPs, which can assist decision makers of Indian organizations to evaluate the competence of their current status of SCPs in the organization. Originality/value As per the knowledge of the authors, this is the first kind of study which empirically investigated the relationships between SCPs and organizational performance in the context of Indian manufacturing organizations.

The research shows that there is a group of SSPEs having a high driving power and low dependence, which requires maximum attention and is of strategic importance, while another group consists of those SSPEs that have high dependence and low driving power, which requires the resultant actions. Research limitations/implications – The weightage obtained for the ISM model development and fuzzy MICMAC are obtained through the judgment of academician and few industry experts. It is the only subjective judgment and any biasing by the person who is judging the SSPEs might influence the final result. A questionnaire survey can be conducted to catch the insight on these SSPEs from more organizations. Practical implications – This category provides a useful tool for top management to differentiate between independent and dependent SSPEs and their mutual relationships which would help them to focus on those key SSPEs that are most significant for effective supplier selection. Originality/value – Arrangement of SSPEs in a hierarchy, the categorization into the driver and dependent categories, and fuzzy MICMAC are an exclusive effort in the area of supplier selection.
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop the relationships among the identified supply chain management barriers (SCMBs) and understand mutual influences of these SCMBs on supply chain implementation. Further, this paper seeks to identify driving and dependent SCMBs using an interpretive structural modelling (ISM) and fuzzy MICMAC (Matrix of Cross-Impact Multiplications Applied to Classification) analysis. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology used in the paper is the ISM with a view to evolving mutual relationships among SCMBs. The identified SCMBs have been classified further, based on their driving and dependence power using fuzzy MICMAC analysis. Findings – This paper has identified 15 key SCMBs which hinder the successful supply chain management (SCM) implementation in an organization and has developed the relationships among the SCMBs using the ISM methodology. Further, this paper analyses the driving and dependent SCMBs using fuzzy MICMAC analysis. The integrated approach is developed here, as the ISM model provides only binary relationship among SCMBs. The fuzzy MICMAC analysis is adopted here, as it is useful in specific analysis related to driving and the dependence power of SCMBs. Research limitations/implications – The weightage for the ISM model development and fuzzy MICMAC is obtained through the judgement of academics and industry experts. Further, validation of the model is necessary through questionnaire survey. Practical implications – The identification of SCMBs, ISM model development and fuzzy MICMAC analysis provide academics and managers a macro picture of the challenges posed by the SCM implementation in an organization. Originality/value – The results will be useful for business managers to understand the SCMBs and overcome these SCMBs during the SCM implementation in an organization.
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to perform content analysis in empirical research in supply chain practices (SCPs) over the last 16 years. The research also aims to identify implications for future research in the area of SCPs. Design/methodology/approach – The review of SCPs research is based on 382 papers published from 1997 to 2012 in the 16 selected journals. The state of research is assessed by examining the empirical research growth of SCPs in selected journals, empirical research growth of SCPs, country of sample industry, sample industry, issues discussed in SCPs literature, purpose/objective of research, research method, response rate and data analysis techniques. The research gap is identified through reviewing the selected practices and framework for future development is proposed. Findings – The empirical research in SCPs predominantly performs in the developed countries like USA, UK and Spain. A significant percentage of articles contribute towards the effect of SCPs on organizational performance, but majority of authors employed performance analysis for at firm level only. Hypothesis testing is seemed to be very a common method of defining research question. From the content analysis, it is found that the response rate for the survey research is very low. The trend in survey research is shifting from descriptive statistics’ to framework building and testing. Research limitations/implications – This paper focuses only the identifications of SCPs and content analysis in empirical research. Further empirical study can be undertaken to find out the relationship between different SCPs and their effect on the organizational performance. Practical implications – The methodological review will provide better understanding of the current state of research in the area of SCPs. Originality/value – Many literature reviews aim at critical examination of supply chain management (SCM), but none of them focused the empirical research in SCPs. Another unique feature of this paper is that, it represents 382 articles from 16 selected journals over the past 16 years.
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to predict the success possibility of supply chain practices (SCPs) implementation based on ten selected SCPs using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Design/methodology/approach – A case study was conducted, and for the same, data were collected from two organizations. The data collected from both the organizations were analyzed using AHP. The pair-wise comparisons of SCPs (usually, alternatives and attributes) are established using a scale indicating the strength with which one SCP dominates another with respect to higher-level SCPs. This scaling process then translated into priority weights. Once the priority weights of the elements/determinants of the module have been calculated, the presence of the corresponding element in the organization was evaluated. An evaluation rating of these elements multiplied by the established priority weights have determined the prediction weight for each SCP. Findings – The application of this procedure is described for the institutionalization module and can be similarly extended to the other SCPs/SCM implementation modules. By establishing the prediction weight for each module, the organizations will be able to evaluate the strength of the corresponding factors present before embarking on the SCPs. The organization can identify and create awareness of the essential elements in the SCPs implementation process and identify the actions necessary before implementing SCPs. The AHP can be a useful guide in the decision-making process of SCPs implementation, especially for medium- and large-scale organizations. Research limitations/implications – The priority weights are subjective and assigned as per the judgment of SCM managers from both the organizations. Further, the priority weights can be obtained from more industry experts through a questionnaire. Second, in this model, only ten practices are taken into consideration for successful SCPs implementation; more practices may be included in future research. Practical implications – The methodological approach presented can be a useful guide in the decision-making process of SCPs implementation in an organization. The outcome will aid practitioners to know the SCPs and benchmark the organizations on the basis of the methodological research conducted. Again, this model can simply act as a possible research model and the data can act as an example that can be utilized for other studies. Originality/value – This is the first kind of study which identified ten SCPs and further deployed AHP approach to see the success possibility of combined SCPs that influence the SCM implementation in an organization.
