This paper reviews the policy development and deployment for research data preservation at Kyoto University, Japan, during fiscal year (FY) 2016. The university's regulations and guidelines for research integrity and data preservation were formulated in FY2014 and 2015, in response to statements from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and supplemental comments by Science Council of Japan (in FY2014). In FY2016, several departments at KU developed a prototype system for research data preservation using open source web frameworks with preference to agility of deployment rather than robustness. The prototype system also worked as the proof of concept for a full-service research data preservation system, which is due to be deployed by KU's central IT department in FY2017 for university-wide use.
The COVID-19 pandemic raised an unprecedented educational challenge that suddenly dropped the entire Higher Education world in a genuine paradigm shift. The 18 months spent since the beginning of this still ongoing crisis represent valuable hindsight for a first analysis and discussion of the moves and the trends the universities were involved in regarding the Teaching and Learning practices. They also represent an opportunity to highlight the dynamics that are already shaping their short and middle/long-term perspectives, especially related to ICT, through the angles of the faculty and stakeholders. This paper proposes a qualitative French/Japanese insight into these moves, trends, and dynamics, as the result of the first step of an ongoing international comparative study.
Research data management (RDM) is the activity to describe and practice what kind of data is to be used/obtained/generated, and how that data is analyzed/saved/shared or published from the plan to completion of the research project. The RDM consists ambiguous concept so that the understanding of RDM is diverse according to each researcher. In order to foster a common recognition of RDM in a Japanese university, a workshop that researchers utilize a rubric to evaluate and review their attitudes to RDM was held. In this paper, we report the process of the development of RDM rubric and the workshop.
