As doenças periodontais (DPs) estão entre as doenças inflamatórias mais prevalentes e possuem etiologia de infecções microbianas. Estudos revelam a possibilidade de associação entre inflamações locais e outros órgãos do corpo, favorecendo a disseminação de patógenos bucais. O objetivo do estudo foi realizar uma revisão integrativa, no intuito de discutir a relevância do tratamento periodontal como aliado na prevenção de doenças cardiovasculares (DVCs) e como tratamento auxiliar dessas doenças. Para isso, foi realizada uma coleta de dados utilizando os dos descritores em inglês e português: (“doença cardiovascular e doença periodontal”; “doença cardiovascular e doença periodontal e inflamação”; doença cardiovascular e doença periodontal e prevenção”) com recorte entre os anos 2017-2022. Após estabelecidos critérios de inclusão (estudos em humanos, independente do sexo, estudos clínicos, observacionais, metanálises, revisões sistemáticas, publicações nos idiomas português, inglês e espanhol) e exclusão (artigos com outras abordagens sobre as DPs e as DCVs diferentes dos aspectos da prevenção das DPs), os artigos foram selecionados para análise. Os resultados revelaram 52 artigos que, após a exclusão dos estudos: apresentavam fuga de tema, não respondiam à questão de investigação ou estavam duplicados, resultando em um total de 26 artigos. O presente estudo ressaltou que a maioria das pesquisas apontam para uma associação entre a periodontite apical e a doença cardiovascular, destacando a necessidade de abordagem do assunto na formação profissional do cirurgião-dentista e a importância de pesquisas clínicas que corroboram com estudos já existentes, favorecendo maior elucidação do tema e maior desenvolvimento em manejo de casos clínicos.
