The rapid changes of the market demands and the increasing competitions in modern society have forced production-oriented enterprises to constantly develop new product to cut the time cost and to improve the efficiency. Therefore, due to the ability to quickly reuse existing cases to obtain a new design solution, design reuse methods have been widely used. The modeling and representation of product design case is the foundation to reuse design cases. Ramon (2005) elaborated and completely describe the case-based reasoning method. However, the modeling method of design case are much less discussed, so do the other related case-based reasoning researches. Studies by Mili (2001) puts forward an approach for the representation and modeling of design knowledge for engineering design activities. Liu (2010) proposed an ontologybased knowledge modeling method and strategies for the reuse of mechanical product designs knowledge. Wang [4] puts forward a four-layer design knowledge structure using various knowledge representation methods to classify and represent design knowledge for complex product. However, the above research works focus more on the modeling of design process, while less attention on the modeling of design case.Muster & Mistree (1989) considered design process as a collection of a series of design decisions and introduce decision-based design theory. They claim that making decisions is the major task for the designers. There are two kinds of decisions: selection decision and compromise decision (Mistree et al. 1993, Panchal et al. 2004). The selection decision making process is to make choices among a number of candidate solutions based on a number of indexes, and the comprise decision is to search for right design variable values to best satisfied for the system request while taking into account the constraints, and the multiple goals. By organizing and managing problem description and solution information of the decision-making process, Panchal (2009) proposes a compromise decision support problem template to make modular divisions, record design process and reuse design knowledge. Ming & Yan (2015) focus on the reuse of compromise decision support problem template, introduces ontology approach to define various modules in the decision template to adapt to the creation, edit and reuse of the decision template for different person. Besides, the consistency check in the maintenance process of the decision support problem template is also studied. The studies about decision based design theory mentioned above have important implications on the design case representation. By reasonably representing previous cases, new design problems can be rapidly solved using case-based reasoning method and the knowledge retrieval process can be more efficient. Therefore, this paper will study the design case representation method under the decision based design environment. CLASSIFICATION AND REPRESENTATION OF DESIGN UNITSUnder the decision based design environment, the design process involves a series of decision-makin...
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
