The GIS college education system covers a wide range of knowledge. It requires high standards of technologies to support it. Colleges and their students have both been greatly challenged in the process of teaching and learning. The main purpose of the GIS college education is to bring up professional engineers who can meet the demands of the society. Through analyzing the GIS college educational system domestically and abroad, details of teaching, as well as practical needs from industries both domestic and abroad, the authors have made suggestions to improve the educational system and teaching contents. One important aspect is that, the authors suggest to use prevailing GIS software establishing a subject full of GIS features and characteristics.
The mechanical properties of rocks can be continuously calculated with the help of theory of elastic mechanics and logging data (AC-sonic log, DEN-density log, CNneutron log). A GIS administration system will be very helpful in running these data. This system applies the client/middle tier/server framework. It is composed of database, data access engine, purview control middleware and clients. Drawing layers are the basic spatial data unit. The 3D distribution of mechanical properties of rocks can be achieved underground by GIS visualization modules.
