El desarrollo humano es un proceso de expansión de las capacidades de las personas de manera que alcancen su potencial y vivan una existencia plena. En el presente trabajo se realizó un análisis descriptivo del comportamiento de dos variables que son consideradas relevantes como indicadores de la gestión gubernamental a nivel de políticas públicas y apertura económica: el índice de desarrollo humano (IDH) y la inversión extranjera directa (IED). Para ello se revisó la teoría relevante y se analizó el grado de relación entre las variables, mediante correlación lineal y test de Pearson. Además, la investigación se refirió también a un estudio longitudinal en el que se muestra la evolución de las variables citadas; se incluye un análisis comparativo entre IDH e inversión pública, así como también entre IDH y Formación bruta de capital fijo (FBKF). Se complementó el análisis de la IED y del IDH, y de esta última variable con la FBKF, al evaluar sus comportamientos en dos grupos de países del mundo: los BRICS y los del G7. Se encontró que en Ecuador entre 2005 y 2012 la correlación entre la IED y el IDH no es estadísticamente significativa; exactamente lo contrario ocurre con la inversión pública y el IDH que fue de 0,939. Ecuador se encuentra a la zaga en el comparativo entre países del G7 y los BRICS en términos de IED y FBKF, lo que sin embargo no ha impedido que su IDH promedio se haya ubicado en niveles altos, incluso por encima del de China.
