PurposePhysical literacy has quickly gained global attention as a holistic approach to combat physical inactivity and obesity. However, research silos may limit the growth and application of the physical literacy paradigm for effective physical activity promotion. The purpose of this study was to measure the underlying network structure of scholars publishing on physical literacy (focusing on empirical research) through co-authorship analysis.MethodsData collection resulted in 1,070 documents related to physical literacy retrieved. A total of 198 articles met inclusion criteria and were included in the full network, with authors operationalized as actors in the network. A total of 75 empirical studies were included in the sub-network for critical appraisal and further analysis. Social network analysis was then conducted at the macro- and component-level, using quantification and visualization techniques.ResultsResults revealed a collaborative, yet fragmented physical literacy network with sub-groups representing substantive and geographically diverse scholars. The majority of scholarship lacked empirical evidence, suggesting a research-practice gap.ConclusionRecommendations for advancing physical literacy research and practice include strategic collaborations that transcend geographic and disciplinary boundaries, cooperative efforts across scholars and practitioners, and productive discourse through professional avenues to progress knowledge generation, dispersion, and application.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused most collegiate recreation facilities and programs to shut down to slow the spread of the virus. Public health guidelines from the state/province, federal, and global level have inundated recreation professionals with messaging to inform reopening strategies. Rasmussen’s risk management framework served as a guide to explore the stakeholders, decisions, and environmental conditions influencing COVID-19 reopening plans and policies in collegiate recreation. A case study of four collegiate recreation departments was conducted, with document analysis employed to examine and interpret reopening plans. The findings highlight campus offices and leadership as major stakeholders in reopening guidelines; risk management decisions utilizing a phased reopening approach that emphasized screening, mask mandates, social distancing and touch points, equipment and floor plans, and cleaning; and communication as a critical environmental condition. Implications for collegiate recreation practitioners include strategies for decision making, dissemination of information, staff training, risk mitigation, and policy enforcement.

Previous research has suggested that individual, social, and environmental factors all play a role in developing individual attitudes regarding sexual violence. On college campuses, both intercollegiate and recreational athletics provide opportunities for students to engage in group settings that can impact these attitudes. The primary purpose of this study was to examine how attitudes towards sexual violence compared across intercollegiate athlete, recreational athlete, and non-athlete populations, while accounting for other individual and school factors. Analysis of a large national dataset found very small but statistically significant differences among these groups in their personal social norms, campus social norms, and bystander efficacy regarding sexual violence. Intercollegiate athletes were slightly lower than non-athletes in their personal social norms and bystander efficacy and slightly higher in their perceived campus social norms, while recreational athletes were higher in bystander efficacy, but lower in personal and campus social norms. Other personal demographic factors, including gender identity and sexual orientation, were also significant, while most campus factors were non-significant. These findings suggest the identification of college sport as an at-risk community for sexual violence may be an oversimplification, with implications for program intervention design.
