Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to compare the topical application of chlorohexidine (CHX) and Metronidazole (MTZ) gels, individually and in combination in patients with gingivitis for up to 12 weeks follow-up. Methods: The clinical trial was conducted at Liaquat University of Medical Health Sciences (LUMHS) Jamshoro and Hyderabad, Institute of Dentistry from 1st March 2019 to 1st March 2020. Patients were selected based on inclusion criteria. Out of 125 screened patients, ninety-nine patients agreed to participate in the study. At the beginning of study all patients were assessed for gingival inflammation by using gingival index (GI) (Loe and silness, 1963). Scaling root planning (SRP) was performed in all patients. Subjects were randomly selected in three groups (n=33 each). In Group-A CHX gel was applied, Group-B Metronidazole gel was applied and the combination of two was applied to patients of Group-C. Patient follow up was done and gingival parameters were assessed at baseline, fourth week and twelve weeks. Apart from the clinical evaluation, a subjective evaluation was also undertaken. Significance level of 0.05 and a desired study power of at least 80% was estimated. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test for comparison was used within groups. Results: A significant improvement in gingival scores was noted in all groups from baseline. At 4 weeks CHX (1.25±0.21) MTZ (1.81±0.38) CHX+MTZ (1.29±0.34) compared to baseline CHX (2.77±0.24) MTZ (2.84±0.54) CHX+MTZ (2.74±0.31) demonstrated substantial improvement (p<0.001). However, gingival scores showed inclination at 12 weeks CHX (1.18±0.41) MTZ (1.21±0.48) CHX+MTZ (1.11±0.14) with no significant difference to week 4 (p>0.001). Objectives: To assist the concept and use of dental floss amongundergraduate dental students of Liaquat University of Medical & Health sciences,Jamshoro. Study Design: Cross-sectional, descriptive case series study. Setting:Institute of Dentistry, Liaquat University of Medical Health, Jamshoro, Pakistan.Period: June 2015 to December 2015. Methodology: In this study 192 studentsof BDS Department, Institute of Dentistry, Liaquat University of Medical & HealthScience, Jamshoro were selected. Questions related to assess the knowledge 87.14%students knew what dental floss was. Results: 74.29% students knew that dentalfloss remove plaque from interdental areas, whereas 25.71% replied don’t know.48.57% of the students thought that dental floss should be customarily used alongwith tooth brushing every day, 24.29% of the students thought that dental floss harmsthe interdental gingiva, whereas majority 40% said that it would not harm the gingiva,35.71% replied don’t know. only 18.57% respondent thought that toothbrushes withadvanced bristles designs would remove interdental plaque similar to dental floss,whereas majority (60%) of the respondent had no any idea about the effectiveness oftwo cleaning methods, practice of using dental floss 18.57% of students use interdentalaids commonly floss and while 81.43% did not use dental floss. 27.14% of the studysubjects use some other interdental aids like tooth picks to clean interdental areas,whereas 72.86% did not follow any other interdental cleaning practice. Conclusion:This study has focused light on the knowledge and practice of interdental aid, sofurther studies are needed. Finally, it could be concluded that awareness regardingdental floss needs to be bolstered in the population as preventive oral health carebehavior.
Objectives: The rational of this study was to prevent pregnancy gingivitis through awareness and improvement of oral hygiene practices during pregnancy. This will consequently reduce the prevalence and severity of gum diseases. Study Design: Observational study. Setting: Outpatients Department of Gynecology, Unit 4, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro. Period: January 2017 to February 2018. Material & Methods: The oral examination was done at First visit (First Trimester) and Gingival index was recorded. All these participants were provided awareness regarding best oral hygiene. After 3 months participants were re-examined and gingival index was re-recorded. Gingival status was recorded through Gingival Index (GI) using disposable gloves (Supermax disposable gloves Made in Malaysia) and sterilized dental examination instruments with blunt ended (noninvasive) probe on the same visit. Results: The overall mean age of study subjects was 27.80±4.03 years, among 340 study subjects, 129(37.9) females were in first trimester of their pregnancy and 211(62.1%) were in second trimester at first visit. Descriptive statics of gingival index assessment score of gingival index at first visit was 1.95±0.51. Conclusion: Oral hygiene education and practices has improved the pregnancy related gum problems and has lessened the severity of gingivitis.
