Interpretar as escritas de si nas cartas publicadas por João Batista Ribeiro de Andrade Fernandes (1860 –1934), em O Commercio de São Paulo, durante sua primeira viagem à Europa, é o objetivo do presente artigo. Comissionado pelo governo brasileiro em 1895, para estudar a organização e métodos empregados no ensino primário e secundário germânicos, o viajante pode publicizar o visto e o vivido de sua travessia. Dentre as impressões privilegiadas, descreveu lugares visitados, pessoas que conheceu, jornais e leituras que realizou em terras estrangeiras, bem como, comentou sobre política, artes, cultura e educação alemães, defendendo estas como modelo para o Brasil. Tomo como fonte principal, as quarenta cartas publicadas no jornal diário, entrecruzando-as com cartas pessoais do viajante a amigos – no intuito de pedir, agradecer e encurtar distâncias e saudades –, revelando uma tríade entre escrita, imprensa e viagem, na medida em que o professor se mostrava um verdadeiro espectador da vida alemã.
Interpretar a atuação de Henrique Maximiano Coelho Netto, enquanto diretor e professor da Escola Dramática, é objetivo do presente artigo. Para tal, recorremos à correspondência desse homem de letras localizada de forma dispersa na Fundação Biblioteca Nacional e na Academia Brasileira de Letras, na qual a vida desse sujeito se entrecruzava com a cena literária e educacional da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, então capital da República. Trabalhamos, assim, na perspectiva da história da cultura escrita, o que nos possibilitou interpretar essas missivas, refletindo sobre os destinatários e remetentes desse professor, enquanto diretor da escola; a finalidade e o contexto da escrita; bem como a relação que ele mantinha com seus interlocutores e a escola em questão. Deste modo, pretendemos ampliar o conhecimento acerca da história desta instituição criada na Primeira República e, sobretudo a respeito de Coelho Netto que teve sua atuação no magistério ofuscada frente às suas outras facetas.
