Since 1994 we have taught a program that combines instruction in intermediate algebra and preparatory chemistry. These are two critical courses for students interested in science, mathematics, engineering, and the health professions. Students receive instruction that coordinates the order and treatment of topics between the two segments. They also receive their instruction in the same classrooms, a tactic that, along with cooperative learning methods in the discussion classroom, fosters strong peer-to-peer connections. The program succeeds, especially in preparing students for general chemistry courses.
