Legitimization, the acceptance of the head injury itself as real, appears to be the fundamental concept that distinguishes this group from other problem-focused self-help groups and professionally led groups.
Therapeutic factors for psychotherapy groups have been extensively studied. This study was an attempt to apply therapeutic factor methodology to an occupational therapy group in order to clarify what participants value in occupational therapy groups.Research was conducted with 35 short term adult inpatients at a free standing psychiatric hospital.Participants were given a modified version of Yalom's Q sort of 60 statements that were ranked from the most valuable to the least valuable. Analysis of responses showed that this study had similar results to studies of psychotherapy groups for short term inpatients. Therefore the hypothesis-that there would be a difference in therapeutic factors' valuation between the occupational therapy group and psychotherapy groups-was rejected. This study also reported comments participants added in a brief closing interview at the end of the Q sort.
