Novel oxygen sensors consisting of a [Ru(bpy)2phen]2+ (bpy: 2,2′‐bipyridyl, phen: phenathroline) portion covalently grafted to a mesostructured silica‐based network are prepared in situ via a sol–gel approach with the help of cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB) surfactant. 1,10‐Phenanthroline covalently grafted to 3‐(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate is used as not only the sol–gel precursor but also as the second ligand of the Ru(bpy)2Cl2 · 2H2O complex to prepare the sol–gel‐derived mesostructured silicates for an oxygen sensor. For comparison purposes, the oxygen sensors in which [Ru(bpy)2phen]Cl2 is conventionally physically incorporated into the matrix are also prepared. Elemental analysis, NMR, Fourier transform IR, UV‐vis electronic absorption, luminescence‐intensity quenching Stern–Volmer plots, and excited‐state decay analysis are used to characterize the obtained oxygen sensors. These obtained bulk xerogels and spin‐coated thin films show that the homogeneity and the sensitivity of the covalently grafted samples are superior to those of the physically incorporated ones, and the highest sensitivity is obtained in the mesostructured bulk xerogel. This improvement in oxygen sensitivity is attributed to the increased diffusivity of oxygen in the uniform and nearly parallel porous structure of the Mobil Catalytic Material 41 mesostructured matrix, the enhanced homogeneity results from the covalently grafted propyl group in –Si–(CH2)3– that acts as the fundamental spacer which prevents interaction between the attached RuII complex and the silica matrix, and optimal dispersion in the mesopores during the sol–gel polycondensation. Furthermore, the greatly minimized leaching effect of the sensing molecules could be observed in the covalently grafted system. The covalent grafting strategy presented in this paper provides superior optical oxygen sensors with homogeneous distribution, improved sensitivity, and simplified calibration plots.

Pure hexagonal-phased Y 1-x BO 3 :Eu x (x ) 0-0.30) nanocrystals with different particle sizes were prepared by a facile sol-gel pyrolysis process, and their photoluminescence spectra evidently showed a size-dependent characteristic because the ratio of the red emission transition ( 5 D 0 f 7 F 2 ) to the orange emission transition ( 5 D 0 f 7 F 1 ) (R/O) was much higher in the smaller particles. Both XRD patterns and IR spectra demonstrated that the lattices of YBO 3 :Eu nanocrystals were distorted and that as the particle size became smaller, the lattices became more distorted. Studies on the charge transfer (CT) bands indicated that Eu 3+ ions can be excited preferentially by different excitation sources in both the bulk and the nanocrystals, suggesting that at least two different types of intrinsic luminescent sites, site 1 and site 2, coexist in YBO 3 :Eu. Site-selective excitation spectra also revealed that a particular site, site 3, existed concurrently in the nanocrystals. Site 2, the site with relatively inferior symmetry of the intrinsic sites, was identified to be of C 1 symmetry. Meanwhile, for the nanosized samples, Eu 3+ ions exhibited enhanced R/O values in both sites 2 and 3, which might be ascribed to the distorted lattices, and thus displayed the observed superior color chromaticity. A pronounced energy transfer between site 2 and site 3 in the nanocrystals was also observed while Eu 3+ concentration was increased to the quenching concentration, which indicated that site 3 may be a disordered surface site surrounding the interior sites.

The momentum and helicity density distributions of the strange quark sea in the nucleon are obtained in leading order from charged-kaon production in deep-inelastic scattering on the deuteron. The distributions are extracted from spin-averaged K� multiplicities, and from K� and inclusive double-spin asymmetries for scattering of polarized positrons by a polarized deuterium target. The shape of the momentum distribution is softer than that of the average of the and quarks. In the region of measurement 0.021.0�GeV2, the helicity distribution is zero within experimental uncertainties

Six new coordination polymers, [Eu(1,2-BDC)(1,2-HBDC)(phen)(H(2)O)](n) (1), [Eu(2)(1,3-BDC)(3)(phen)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](n).4nH(2)O (2), [Eu(1,4-BDC)(3/2)(phen)(H(2)O)](n) (3), [Yb(2)(1,2-BDC)(3)(phen)(H(2)O)(2)](n).3.5nH(2)O (4), [Yb(2)(1,3-BDC)(3)(phen)(1/2)](n) (5), and [Yb(2)(1,4-BDC)(3)(phen)(2)(H(2)O)](n) (6), were synthesized by hydrothermal reactions of lanthanide chlorides with three isomers of benzenedicarboxylic acid (H(2)BDC) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 has a 2-D herringbone architecture with a Z-shaped cavity. 2 and 5 have different 3-D networks, but both are formed by 1,3-BDC anions bridging metal centers (Eu or Yb) via carboxylate groups. 3 and 6 possess similar layer structures which are further constructed to form 3-D networks by hydrogen bonds and/or pi-pi aromatic interactions. 4 comprises 1-D chains that are further interlinked via hydrogen bonds, resulting in a 3-D network. In the three europium complexes, all the europium ions are eight-coordinated, while the coordination numbers of the ytterbium ions in other three-coordination polymers range from six to eight. Crystal data: for 1, monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c, with a = 12.565(6) A, b = 16.005(8) A, c = 12.891(6) A, beta = 102.173(8) degrees, and Z = 4; for 2, monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c, with a = 20.979(4) A, b = 11.5989(19) A, c = 20.810(3) A, beta = 110.391(3) degrees, and Z = 4; for 3, triclinic, space group P1, with a = 10.331(5) A, b = 10.887(5) A, c = 11.404(5) A, alpha = 107.660(7) degrees, beta = 91.787(7) degrees, gamma = 112.946(6) degrees, and Z = 2; for 4, triclinic, space group P1, with a = 11.517(5) A, b = 13.339(5) A, c = 13.595(6) A, alpha = 87.888(7) degrees, beta = 67.759(6) degrees, gamma = 68.070(6) degrees, and Z = 2; for 5, orthorhombic, space group C222(1), with a = 8.174(2) A, b = 24.497(7) A, c = 29.161(8) A, and Z = 8; for 6, triclinic, space group P1, with a = 10.349(3) A, b = 11.052(3) A, c = 19.431(6) A, alpha = 105.464(4) degrees, beta = 91.300(5) degrees, gamma = 93.655(5) degrees, and Z = 2. The magnetic properties of 1 and 4 were investigated. The photophysical properties of 1 were also studied.

We report the observation of enhanced red emission at 613 nm originating from 5 D 0 f 7 F 2 transition of Eu 3+ -doped CaMoO 4 with Bi 3+ as an additive, under excitation either into the 5 L 6 state with 395 nm or the 5 D 2 state with 465 nm. The luminescence properties as a function of Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ concentrations are studied. Strongly enhanced red emission of Eu 3+ is obtained by adding Bi 3+ instead of increasing the Eu 3+ concentration. For a fixed Eu 3+ concentration, there is an optimal Bi 3+ concentration, at which the maximum luminescence intensity is achieved. The red emission of CaMoO 4 :0.05Eu 3+ is enhanced by a factor of 3 as 0.2 Bi 3+ is co-doped into the system, stronger than that of commercial Y 2 O 2 S:Eu 3+ and Y 2 O 3 :Eu 3+ phosphors. Lifetime and diffuse reflection spectra measurements indicate that the red emission enhancement is due to the enhanced transition probabilities from the ground state to 5 L 6 and 5 D 2 states of Eu 3+ in the distorted crystal field in which it is considered that more odd-rank crystal field components are induced by crystal structural distortion and symmetry decreasing with the addition of Bi 3+ , leading to more opposite parity components, for example, 4f 5 5d states, mixed into the 4f 6 transitional levels of Eu 3+ . The energy transfer from Bi 3+ to Eu 3+ also occurs and is discussed. The present material is a promising red-emitting phosphor for white light diodes with near-UV/blue GaN-based chips.

The α-Ca2P2O7:Eu2+, Mn2+ phosphors show two emission bands peaking at around 416 (blue) and 600nm (orange), originating from the allowed f-d transition of Eu2+ and the forbidden T14-A16 transition of Mn2+, respectively, under near ultraviolet (UV) excitation at 400nm. Spectroscopy and fluorescence lifetime measurements demonstrate that energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+ performs with transfer efficiency as high as 65% for Mn2+ concentration of 12mol%. The authors have fabricated a white light emitting diode (LED) through the integration of GaN near-UV chip and two phosphor blends (α-Ca2P2O7:Eu2+, Mn2+ blue-orange phosphor and Ba2SiO4:Eu2+ green phosphor) into a single package. The white LED shows color rendering index of 78, luminescent efficiency of 9lm∕W, and low color point variation against forward-bias currents.
