As evidenced by the growth of additive manufacturing, there is extensive value in customization, both in terms of chemistry and structure. Direct laser writing is a promising approach to the maskless patterning of a broad range of nano to microscale materials. We employ a methodology using laser-induced solvothermal voxels, which combines the control of solvothermal chemistry for nanoparticle synthesis with the patterning abilities of direct laser writing, enabling the integration of nanocrystalline oxides, metals, and mixed metal oxides and alloys. We present an expanded range of materials that can be easily fabricated through this method and explore how this process can be used for 2.5D topographical patterning and layering with potential applications for catalysis and sensing.
An experimental investigation and the optical modeling of the structural coloration produced from total internal reflection interference within 3D microstructures are described. Ray‐tracing simulations coupled with color visualization and spectral analysis techniques are used to model, examine, and rationalize the iridescence generated for a range of microgeometries, including hemicylinders and truncated hemispheres, under varying illumination conditions. An approach to deconstruct the observed iridescence and complex far‐field spectral features into its elementary components and systematically link them to ray trajectories that emanate from the illuminated microstructures is demonstrated. The results are compared with experiments, wherein microstructures are fabricated with methods such as chemical etching, multiphoton lithography, and grayscale lithography. Microstructure arrays patterned on surfaces with varying orientation and size lead to unique color‐traveling optical effects and highlight opportunities for how total internal reflection interference can be used to create customizable reflective iridescence. The findings herein provide a robust conceptual framework for rationalizing this multibounce interference mechanism and establish approaches for characterizing and tailoring the optical and iridescent properties of microstructured surfaces.
Water electrolysis is of interest as a sustainable way to produce clean hydrogen and oxygen fuel and help mitigate the rising problems of climate change while meeting global energy demands. High-efficiency, stable, and earth-abundant bifunctional catalysts are needed to enable more effective electrochemical cells for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, we investigate the synthesis, composition, performance, and mechanism of multimetal catalysts serving dual functionality in both OER and HER of water electrolysis. Through a laser synthesis method, we synthesized heterogeneous catalysts of nanocrystalline multimetallic alloy pockets embedded within an amorphous oxide matrix. We evaluated the performance and composition of a range of mixed transition-metal oxide materials for both OER and HER, ultimately synthesizing a Cr0.01Fe0.27Co0.34Ni0.38O x /C y catalyst that has a stable, high-rate, and competitive overall water splitting performance of 1.76 V at 100 mA cm–2 in an alkaline medium. Using density functional theory to gain insight as the active site and mechanism, we propose that the inclusion of a minor amount of Cr increases the degeneracy of energetic states that lowers the cost of forming the O 2 p–d bond and H 1 s–d bond due to the hybridization of s, p, and d orbitals from Cr. Using a two-electrode water electrolysis cell with a constant potential of 1.636 V to mimic the setup for fuel production, we found the catalyst to be stable at 14–15 mA cm–2 for 40 h. This laser synthesis method allowing for facile and rapid synthesis of complex multimetal systems demonstrates how doping a Fe, Co, and Ni heterogeneous amorphous/nanocrystalline structure with small amounts of Cr is important for bifunctional catalytic behavior, particularly for increasing HER functionality in advancing our understanding for future electrocatalytic design.

This has been instrumental in maintaining a finger on the pulse of staff’s needs and creating a nurturing culture that champions every professional. Publix is not only a place where ‘shopping is a pleasure,’ but where working is a pleasure also.More than 150 years ago, the Civil Rights Act of 1866 affirmed that U.S. citizens are entitled to equal protection under the law. Over 50 years ago, the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed discrimination. However, despite over a century of legislation and activism, discrimination remains a pressing issue plaguing America today. Despite racial turmoil that afflicts our society, Publix has announced they will not stand for injustice by emphasizing, “Let’s end the injustice. Let’s stand together.” Publix has made a $1 million contribution to the National Urban League affiliates across the Southeast, as they continue to support their civil rights efforts.Publix offers its associates career growth, and the necessary training for equitable promotional opportunities for all their diverse employees. Furthermore, it invests in its associates' health, with a benefits package that encourages wellness, smoking cessation, and provides primary care, vision, and dental plans. Using a qualitative process based on personal experiences and documented literature, this case study will guide you through some of Publix’s hallmark human resource policies, how the company has embraced them, and how it works daily to encourage and incentivize its associates' career growth.
