The paper describes results from the 'Tracking Project', a new method for examining agency overlap, repeat service use and shared clients/patients amongst social and health care agencies in the community. This is the first project in this country to combine total population databases from a range of social, health care and criminal justice agencies to give a multidisciplinary database for one county (n = 97,162 cases), through standardised anonymisation of agency databases, using SOUNDEX, a software programme. A range of 20 community social and health care agencies were shown to have a large overlap with each other in a two-year period, indicating high proportions of shared patients/clients. Accident and Emergency is used as an example of major overlap: 16.2% (n = 39,992) of persons who attended a community agency had attended Accident and Emergency as compared to 8.2% (n = 775,000) of the total population of the county. Of these, 96% who had attended seven or more different community agencies had also attended Accident and Emergency. Further statistical analysis of Accident and Emergency attendance as a characteristic of community agency populations (n = 39,992) revealed that increasing frequency of attendance at Accident and Emergency was very strongly associated with increasing use of other services. That is, the patients that repeatedly attend Accident and Emergency are much more likely to attend more other agencies, indicating the possibility that they share more problematic or difficult patients. Research questions arising from these data are discussed and future research methods suggested in order to derive predictors from the database and develop screening instruments to identify multiple agency attenders for targeting or multidisciplinary working. It is suggested that Accident and Emergency attendance might serve as an important predictor of multiple agency attendance.
In recent years, text messaging (“texting”) has become the dominant method of communication for young adults. This prevalence of texting has led to research exploring the beneficial and detrimental behaviors associated with texting, indicating wide-ranging social and human factors implications. As texting continues to take precedence over other forms of communication and research begins to address texting behaviors, the question arises about whether people use other mobile instant messaging applications (“IM apps”) similarly. The current study expands on the research of texting behaviors by asking how similarly young adults view apps (e.g., WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, etc.) to texting. Results indicated that young adults in the United States use texting more frequently than text-based apps, but that these apps are viewed similarly to texting. The implication is that research addressing texting behaviors may apply to other forms of text-based communication; however, texting remains the most prominent mode of communication, justifying its own continued examination.
Objective The purpose of the present research is to establish measurement equivalence and test differences in reliability between computerized and pencil-and-paper-based tests of spatial cognition. Background Researchers have increasingly adopted computerized test formats, but few attempt to establish equivalence for computer-based and paper-based tests. The mixed results in the literature on the test mode effect, which occurs when performance differs as a function of test medium, highlight the need to test for, instead of assume, measurement equivalence. One domain that has been increasingly computerized and is thus in need of tests of measurement equivalence across test mode is spatial cognition. Method In the present study, 244 undergraduate students completed two measures of spatial ability (i.e., spatial visualization and cross-sectioning) in either computer- or paper-and-pencil-based format. Results Measurement equivalence was not supported across computer-based and paper-based formats for either spatial test. The results also indicated that test administration type affected the types of errors made on the spatial visualization task, which further highlights the conceptual differences between test mediums. Paper-based tests also demonstrated increased reliability when compared with computerized versions of the tests. Conclusion The results of the measurement equivalence tests caution against treating computer- and paper-based versions of spatial measures as equivalent. We encourage subsequent work to demonstrate test mode equivalence prior to the utilization of spatial measures because current evidence suggests they may not reliably capture the same construct. Application The assessment of test type differences may influence the medium in which spatial cognition tests are administered.
The present study surveyed a sample of middle school students on their technology habits, with a primary focus on texting behaviors. A secondary sample of college students was surveyed as a comparison group to examine individual differences in texting behaviors. Results indicate that college students text more frequently than middle schoolers; however, college students’ texting behaviors decrease in frequency as they get older, whereas middle schoolers’ texting behaviors increase in frequency. Females also generally reported texting more frequently than males. Extraversion was found to be predictive of texting in the middle school sample, but both Extraversion and Neuroticism were found to be predictive of texting in the college sample. Results are discussed in the context of previous research and with respect to human factors and developmental psychology, such that the study of technology use could offer insight into the social development of adolescents and young adults.
