Siddha and Ayurveda system of medicine are important field of traditional medicine with Vedic and post Vedic origin in India. Both the system of medicine were formulated by Noblemen who are known by different names like Sage, Rishi’s, etc. Siddha and Ayurveda systems of medicine have many similarities like humoral pathology (Thridhosham/ thrithodam), usage of herbs, and diagnostic methods to name a few and also few differences.Various Siddha and Ayurveda literatures were reviewed to document scientific and rationale diversities prevailing in Siddha and Ayurveda fundamental concepts namely Siddha maruthuvanga churukkam, Sushrutha Samhita etc. Based on the review of literature, some scientific diversities and rationales are prevailing in the Siddha and Ayurveda systems of medicine. Even though both the systems seem to be similar, all the basic concepts in the Siddha system comes under a single entity called 96 thathuvas. Whereas in the Ayurveda system of medicine, the basic concepts are not organized under a single entity. Neither system of medicine is higher than the other and each system of medicine is unique in its own.
Background: On March 12, 2020, WHO declared Novel Coronavirus disease as a pandemic outbreak all over the world. The outbreak had led the medical sector to a new platform, in the implementation of ancient knowledge of the Siddha medicine in treatment, management, and prevention of this prevailing pandemic. According to Siddha science, any vitiation in the life force is the main cause of diseases in human beings. pandemic diseases caused due to infectious microorganisms are called ‘Kollai Noigal’ in various Siddha literatures. Aim and objective: To classify the Novel Coronavirus disease based on the Siddha Humoural principles and to elicit the changes of Ninety-six Thatthuvam (Ninety - six basic principles), Uyir Thathukkal and Udal Thathukkal. Materials and methods: This study is accomplished mainly for literature research. Various Siddha texts such as Sattamuni gnanam, Agathiyar Gunavagadam, Agathiyar vallathi Naadi, Theraiyar Sekarappa, etc. were referred. Numerous research articles on COVID 19 were critically reviewed from Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, etc. Discussion: By critically reviewing the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 with Siddha science, the authors had thrown light especially on the involvement of all basic components of the Tri thodam particularly Mukkutram verupadu (Tri humoral vitiation) in eliciting the pathogenesis of the disease. Conclusion: In this scientific review, the authors have attempted to comprehend the pathogenesis of Novel coronavirus disease in the context of Siddha's basic principles.
BackgroundCOVID-19 resulted in loss of human lives owing to respiratory failure caused by dysregulated immune system. Though many treatments are evaluated, the most appropriate is yet to be established. We hypothesized accelerated recovery and reduced mortality in mild, moderate and severe COVID-19 with Siddha regimen consisting of natural products.MethodsIn a randomized, controlled open-label trial conducted on 200 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, they were allocated equally to be treated with add-on Siddha regimen with Standard care or only standard care. The primary and secondary end points were accelerated recovery (≤ 7 days) and mortality comparison between the groups respectively. Patients were followed through 90 days.ResultsIn this study the accelerated recovery was 59.0% and 27.0% in treatment and control group (ITT analyses) (p < 0.001) respectively and Odds for it were four times higher in the treatment group (OR: 3.9; 95% CI: 1.9, 8.0). The estimated median time for recovery in the treatment group was 7 days (95% CI: 6.0, 8.0; p=0.003) and 10 days (95% CI: 8.7, 11.3) in control. Hazard ratio for death in control was 2.3 times that of treatment group. No adverse reactions or alarming laboratory values were observed in response to intervention. In severe treatment group (n=80), mortality was 15.0% and 39.5% in control (n=81). The COVID stage progression was 65% less in treatment group.ConclusionSiddha regimen demonstrated that they can synergistically improve oxygenation status, enhance the recovery rate and reduce the mortality better as compared to only Standard of Care.
