The wide adoption of dicamba-tolerant (DT) soybean has led to numerous cases of off-target dicamba damage to non-DT soybean and dicot crops. This study aimed to develop a method to differentiate soybean response to dicamba using unmanned-aerial-vehicle-based imagery and machine learning models. Soybean lines were visually classified into three classes of injury, i.e., tolerant, moderate, and susceptible to off-target dicamba. A quadcopter with a built-in RGB camera was used to collect images of field plots at a height of 20 m above ground level. Seven image features were extracted for each plot, including canopy coverage, contrast, entropy, green leaf index, hue, saturation, and triangular greenness index. Classification models based on artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF) algorithms were developed to differentiate the three classes of response to dicamba. Significant differences for each feature were observed among classes and no significant differences across fields were observed. The ANN and RF models were able to precisely distinguish tolerant and susceptible lines with an overall accuracy of 0.74 and 0.75, respectively. The imagery-based classification model can be implemented in a breeding program to effectively differentiate phenotypic dicamba response and identify soybean lines with tolerance to off-target dicamba damage.
Linear partial least square and non-linear support vector machine regression analysis with various preprocessing techniques and their combinations were used to determine the soluble solids content of hardy kiwi fruits by a handheld, portable near-infrared spectroscopy. Fruits of four species, namely Autumn sense (A), Chungsan (C), Daesung (D), and Green ball (Gb) were collected from five different areas of Gwangyang (G), Muju (M), Suwon (S), Wonju (Q), and Yeongwol (Y) in South Korea. The dataset for calibration and prediction was prepared based on each area, species, and in combination. Half of the dataset of each area, species, and combined dataset was used as calibrated data and the rest was used for model validation. The best prediction correlation coefficient ranges between 0.67 and 0.75, 0.61 and 0.77, and 0.68 for the area, species, combined dataset, respectively using partial least square regression (PLSR) method with different preprocessing techniques. On the other hand, the best correlation coefficient of predictions using the support vector machine regression (SVM-R) algorithm was 0.68 and 0.80, 0.62 and 0.79, and 0.74 for the area, species, and combined dataset, respectively. In most cases, the SVM-R algorithm produced better results with Autoscale preprocessing except G area and species Gb, whereas the PLS algorithm shows a significant difference in calibration and prediction models for different preprocessing techniques. Therefore, the SVM-R method was superior to the PLSR method in predicting soluble solids content of hardy kiwi fruits and non-linear models may be a better alternative to monitor soluble solids content of fruits. The finding of this research can be used as a reference for the prediction of hardy kiwi fruits soluble solids content as well as harvesting time with better prediction models.
The study was aimed to enhance the nutritional quality of sponge cakes with oyster mushroom (Pleurotus sajor-caju). In this study, the physicochemical, functional, and sensory properties of cake supplemented with five different levels of mushroom powder (0 as control, 5%, 7%, 10%, and 12%) were evaluated. The results revealed that both hot air dried (HD) and freeze dried (FD) mushroom powder contained a higher amount of protein, fat, ash and fiber ontent compared with wheat flour used in cake, but the carbohydrate and moisture content showed the reverse trend. The study also found that increasing the level of fortification from 0% to 12% mushroom powder also increased the protein, fat, ash, and fiber content in the cake. FD mushroom powder significantly (p ≤ 0.05) recorded the highest protein (11.72%-15.16%), fat (20.01%-21.9%), ash (1.75%-1.92%), and fiber (1.39%-1.74%) with increasing the level of supplementation from 5%-12%. In contrast, carbohydrate content of cake decreased from 34.13%-31.15% with increasing the level of FD mushroom from 5%-12%. Also, the volume and weight of the cake with FD mushroom were higher compared to HD and control sample. The results of sensory evaluation indicated that sponge cake with 10% FD oyster mushroom was rated the most acceptable after the control.
Plant lodging is one of the most essential phenotypes for soybean breeding programs. Soybean lodging is conventionally evaluated visually by breeders, which is time-consuming and subject to human errors. This study aimed to investigate the potential of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based imagery and machine learning in assessing the lodging conditions of soybean breeding lines. A UAV imaging system equipped with an RGB (red-green-blue) camera was used to collect the imagery data of 1266 four-row plots in a soybean breeding field at the reproductive stage. Soybean lodging scores were visually assessed by experienced breeders, and the scores were grouped into four classes, i.e., non-lodging, moderate lodging, high lodging, and severe lodging. UAV images were stitched to build orthomosaics, and soybean plots were segmented using a grid method. Twelve image features were extracted from the collected images to assess the lodging scores of each breeding line. Four models, i.e., extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), random forest (RF), K-nearest neighbor (KNN) and artificial neural network (ANN), were evaluated to classify soybean lodging classes. Five data preprocessing methods were used to treat the imbalanced dataset to improve classification accuracy. Results indicate that the preprocessing method SMOTE-ENN consistently performs well for all four (XGBoost, RF, KNN, and ANN) classifiers, achieving the highest overall accuracy (OA), lowest misclassification, higher F1-score, and higher Kappa coefficient. This suggests that Synthetic Minority Oversampling-Edited Nearest Neighbor (SMOTE-ENN) may be a good preprocessing method for using unbalanced datasets and the classification task. Furthermore, an overall accuracy of 96% was obtained using the SMOTE-ENN dataset and ANN classifier. The study indicated that an imagery-based classification model could be implemented in a breeding program to differentiate soybean lodging phenotype and classify lodging scores effectively.
