The article presents the results of the study of the Funnel Beaker culture settlement at site Polesie 1, com. Łyszkowice. There have been recognised very damaged remnants of a settlement and campsites of Neolithic communities. The author of the study links them to the process of colonisation, which had started in Kujawy or eastern Wielkopolska.
Rzepecki S. 2016. From potatoes to barrows, or there and back again. Sprawozdania Archeologiczne 68,
409-419.The dissemination of potato cultivation in the territory of Poland created a necessity for the regular removal of stones from the surface of fields. The structures built with the use of these stones can imitate barrows, for example. This issue was analysed when studying the cemetery of the Pomeranian culture in Nowa Sikorska Huta. The author also addresses the problem in the role that imagination can play when employed for the interpretation of archaeological objects.Key words: barrow, heuristics, Kashubian Lake District, Pomeranian culture Received: 08.01.2016; Revised: 20.03.2016; Accepted: 04.04.2016 The meaning of the somewhat eccentric title of this paper shall be explained at the end of this disquisition. In this point, however, I feel obliged to introduce some clarification to the object of the study. The disquisition refers to the relationship between an observation and an interpretation, and this particular study concerns the barrows with stone mounds. I would like to add that although the presented study is a continuation of my earlier researches (Rzepecki 2013;Rzepecki et al. 2015), it is also meant as a polemic against the findings by Radosław Janiak (2014) described in the book "Kurhany z młodszych okresów epoki brązu i wczesnej epoki żelaza na Pojezierzu Kaszubskim" ("Burial Mounds from the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages in the Kashubian Lake District").
