Mitolojinin önemli karakterleri arasında yer alan karışık yaratıklar en erken Mezopotamya, Mısır ve Anadolu sanatında belgelenmektedir. İnsan ve hayvan uzuvlarının birleştirilmesi ile oluşturulan karışık yaratıkların inanç sistemindeki işlevleri net değildir. Betimlemeler içerisinde tanrılar ile ilişkileri doğrudan ya da dolaylı aktarılabilen karışık yaratıkların, tanrıların hizmetçileri, insantanrı arasında bağlantıyı sağlayan yardımcılar oldukları düşünülebilir. Antik çağ insanının hayal gücünün ürünü olan bu yaratıklar temelde, insanın anlamlandıramadığı durumların ve korkularının somutlaştırılmış betimlemeleridirler. Bu çalışmada yer alan at ile ilişkili karışık yaratıklar; boğa, aslan, keçi, koç, ejder, balık ve kuş gibi hayvanların uzuvları ile insan uzuvlarının birleşiminden oluşturulmuştur. Betimlemeler içerisinde tekil bir örnek hariç hepsi kanatlı at ile ilişkilidir. Bunlar arasında Yunan mitolojisinde özgün bir doğuş efsanesine sahip olmayan ve aynı zamanda Mezopotamya ve Mısır gibi doğu sanatında bilinmeyen karışık yaratıklar mevcuttur. Ayrıca, klasik mitolojide yer alan at ile ilişkili karışık yaratıkların kökenine dair görüşler çoğunlukla Mezopotamya ve Mısır sanatı üzerine yoğunlaşmış, söz konusu düşünce, sanat ve kültürün Anadolu'daki varlığı yeterince irdelenmemiştir. Bu makalede, Anadolu inanç sisteminden köklenen, Urartu mitolojisi ve sanatı içerisinde gelişerek ve çeşitlenerek devam eden at ile ilişkili karışık yaratıklar üzerine yeni bilgilerin sunulması amaçlanmaktadır.
