ÖZ. Bu çalışmanın amacı ortaokul 8. sınıf öğrencilerinin eşitlik, adalet, özgürlük ve dayanışma değerlerine ilişkin algılarını karikatürler aracılığıyla ortaya koymaktır. Nitel araştırma yöntemi temelinde keşfedici araştırma modeline göre desenlenen araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2014-2015 öğretim yılında Manisa ili Yunusemre ilçesindeki bir devlet ortaokulunun 8. sınıf öğrencileri oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın birinci aşamasında gönüllü 60 öğrenciye her birinden üçer tane olmak kaydıyla ele alınan dört değere ilişkin karikatürler verilerek bunları ilgili değerlerle eşleştirmesi istenmiştir. This study aims to investigate eight grade students' perceptions of some democratic values through the use of cartoons. The values under examination are equality, justice, freedom and solidarity. Designed as an explorative qualitative study, this work intends to describe and discuss the participants' perceptions on some values. The study group consists of 60 grade eight students attending to public school in Manisa province in 2014-2015 academic year. At the first phase of the study, all students in the study group were given a matching exercise. Then they were asked to match each cartoon in their worksheets to the relevant democratic value. At the second phase, it was requested from students to associate each given cartoon to relevant democratic value and then interpret and evaluate her/his reasoning behind each association they made. The findings reveal that more than half of the students intermixes the values of justice and equality. They also experienced difficulties in interpreting the cartoons related to freedom. The findings also indicate that students perceive justice as a more important and useful value than equality. Some of them defended that in order to achieve at more fair social life standards, it is necessary to practice positive discrimination against some disadvantaged individuals or groups. Besides, most participants perceived freedom mostly to freedom of thought and freedom of action, while a sizeable group associated the value of equality with sharing, not being greedy, to be contended and congenial. In relation with the value of solidar...
This paper aims to determine the predictive relationships between achievement goals and learning approaches in the context of social studies teaching and to compare the goal orientation models (3x2, 2x2) in the context of their relationships with learning approaches. The study utilized the multi-factorial predictive correlational design. The study sample consists of 259 middle school students, who were selected by simple random sampling technique, studying in public schools in the central districts of Manisa, a province in the west of Turkey, in the 2018-2019. academic year. The data were collected by means of " Social Studies Oriented Achievement Goal Scale" and "Social Studies Learning Approaches Scale ". The study concludes that learning achievement goals positively predict deep learning approaches but negatively predict surface learning approaches. Also, performance-goal orientation negatively predicts deep learning approaches but positively predicts surface learning approaches. Compared to the 3x2 model, the 2x2 achievement goal model showed a better fit with the data in explaining the relationships between achievement goals and learning approaches. Findings revealed the complex structure of achievement goals specific to the subject area. The results of the research were discussed in the context of the effects of achievement goals on the learning process.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the epistemological beliefs of middle school students by means of draw-write-tell technique which is formed from three phases. Designed as a qualitative phenomenological research, this study employs 96 students (51 female, 45 male) selected by convenience sampling technique. The participants were attending various grade levels of a state secondary school in Yunusemre district of Manisa province in 2017-2018 academic year. In the first stage of the research, students were asked to pencil draw five things reminding or representing them the word “knowledge”. In the second stage, each student was asked to select one drawing amongst five, which best meets the concept of “knowledge” according to her/his personal opinion and which is identified with “knowledge” the most and write down why she/he chose this one. In the third stage, a total of 12 different focus group interviews were conducted with 53 volunteering students amongst the ones having participated in the earlier research stages. The data obtained from the first stage was thematically analyzed, while the remaining data was analyzed phenomenologically. Research findings show that most of the students see the authorities and the objects out there as sources of knowledge. In the processes of knowledge acquisition, they also perceive themselves as passive recipients of any given knowledge. It is observed that it is possible to measure the epistemological beliefs of the students for the source of knowledge through the drawings and the accuracy and justification of knowledge through the written materials and focus group interviews. Research results show that draw-write-tell technique is a new approach useful and practical in measuring the epistemological beliefs of middle school students.

This study aims to be an in-depth investigation, from an interpretative perspective, of eighth-year secondary school pupils' perceptions of equality, justice, and freedom values that are considered fundamental to all democratic values. The study is designed according to the phenomenology model as a qualitative research method, and the participants were 10 pupils (six male and four female), selected by convenience sampling from a public secondary school in the town of Yunusemre, Manisa, in the 2014-2015 school year. A phenomenological analysis was applied to the data obtained from semi-structured interviews. The study findings suggest that the pupils grasped the difference between justice and equality by explaining the value of equality from social, educational, political, and legal standpoints. They stressed the importance of justice for social life, and said that they made an effort to be fair in their daily lives. They explained the value of freedom in the categories of the liberty to do anything, the possession of basic human rights, and the lifting of personal restrictions. The study concludes that the pupils' perceptions of the values of equality, justice, and freedom vary according to the place, situation, and personal context.
