This study examined the effect of computer-assisted instruction (CAI), used as a problem-solving supplement to classroom instruction, on students' understanding of chemical formulas and mole concept, their attitudes toward chemistry subjects, and CAI. The objective was to assess the effectiveness of CAI over recitation hours when both teaching methods were used as a supplement to the traditional chemistry instruction. We randomly selected two classes in a secondary school. Each teaching strategy was randomly assigned to one class. The experimental group received supplementary instruction delivered via CAI, while the control group received similar instruction through recitation hours. The data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance and t-test. It was found that the students who used the CAI accompanied with lectures scored significantly higher than those who attended recitation hours, in terms of school subject achievement in chemistry and attitudes toward chemistry subjects. In addition, there was a significant improvement in the attitudes of students in the experimental group toward the use of computers in a chemistry course. There was no significant difference between the performances of females versus males in each treatment group.

Recent developments and new directions in education have emphasised learners' needs, profile and pedagogical aspects by focusing on learner-centered approaches in educational settings. e-Learning, on the other hand, guarantees learners the opportunity of learning in their own way, and leads to new considerations in course design. e-Learning is defined as the new form of learning, rather than the use of new technologies. It requires new considerations in educational aspects and delivery methods. Personalised technologies and new approaches such as the use of ontologies and Semantic Webs in e-learning are some of the next challenges for both education and society in the future. This paper provides an overview and rationale for personalised web-based learning and personalised technologies. Also, it presents ontologies by emphasising the various usages of this term in a variety of fields, the main ontology structures, methodologies and design principles, and its applications in education.

ÖZ.Günümüzde eğitsel sosyal ağ ortamlarından birisi olan Edmodo, etkileşimi artırarak birlikte öğrenmeye olanak sağlamaktadır. Nitel ve nicel araştırma yöntemlerinin birlikte kullanıldığı bu çalışmada Ankara'da özel bir okulun ilköğretim bölümünden toplam 182 öğrencinin derse destek olarak Edmodo ortamını kullanımı incelenmiş, Edmodo'nun özellikleri ve derste kullanılmasına yönelik öğrenci görüşlerinin ortaya konması amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmanın veri toplama araçlarını, araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen Edmodo Ortamına Karşı Öğrenci Görüşleri Anketi, Edmodo Ortamını Değerlendirme Rubriği ve yapılandırılmış görüşme soruları oluşturmuştur. Elde edilen veriler üzerinde nicel analiz sonucu elde edilen bulgular, nitel içerik analizi ile ortaya çıkan bulgular ile birlikte yorumlanmıştır. Sonuçta, öğrencilerin Edmodo'nun bazı özelliklerine ilişkin olumsuz görüşleri olmasına rağmen, Edmodo'yu öğrenmelerine olumlu etkisi olan bir sistem olarak gördükleri tespit edilmiştir. The purpose of this study is to investigate students' opinions related to Edmodo which used a social network environment tool in an Information Technologies course. In this case study, both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used. Participants of the study were 182 students from primary school of a private college in Ankara. Data collection tools were online Edmodo usage questionnaire, interviews and an evaluation rubric that was developed by the researchers. Also, structured interview questions were asked. Qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods were used. Results revealed that, although some negative points indicated, students generally find Edmodo as an effective tool for supporting their learning. Although many developments have been made in the design and development of learning object repositories (LORs), the efficient use of such systems is still questionable. Without realising the functional use of such systems or considering the involvement of their dynamic users, these systems would probably become obsolete. This study includes both qualitative and quantitative research methods for the investigation of prospective teachers' views on the operational aspects of such tools. The participants in this study were 75 prospective teachers that were participating in the graduate certification programme for secondary school subject teachers at Baskent University in Turkey. To realise the objectives of this study, prospective teachers were required to use the 17 of the existing LORs in their course. Analysis was also conducted on those LORs identified by the researchers. Afterwards, teachers were asked to answer an open-ended question in paper and pencil form.Through qualitative analysis, the responses of teachers were coded and presented in a table. The results of this analysis revealed many interesting points regarding teachers' thoughts on the main factors in repositories and are expected to guide the designers, developers and users of LORs to focus on the main issues related to the improvement of functionality and efficiency of such systems.
