Este é um artigo publicado em acesso aberto (Open Access) sob a licença Creative Commons Attribution, que permite uso, distribuição e reprodução em qualquer meio, sem restrições desde que o trabalho original seja corretamente citado.a ResumoEste artigo tem como objetivo realizar a análise comparativa de dureza e microestrutural do material de dois tambores de freio construídos em ferro fundido cinzento, sendo um com suas características iniciais de fábrica sem qualquer tipo de alteração e outro usado e refundido em processo artesanal, com o histórico de uso desconhecido. A partir daí, tornou-se possível verificar se o processo primitivo de refusão em areia provocou mudanças nas propriedades mecânica e microestrutural quando comparado com as propriedades iniciais do material de fábrica. Com a obtenção dos resultados, verificou-se que há a possibilidade do reaproveitamento da matéria prima de ferro fundido, porém não para a mesma aplicação. Sobre os dois materiais foram realizadas as seguintes análises: Metalografia com microscópio óptico e análise de dureza Rockwell. Baseado nos resultados observou-se que torna-se improvável a utilização do tambor de freio refundido para a mesma aplicação, pois houve aumento nos precipitados de grafita, influenciando diretamente na dureza do material em 13,26% de aumento em relação ao material novo, ocasionado principalmente devido ao processo de fundição artesanal não possuir controle na taxa de resfriamento.
