Desde 1959 circuló profusamente en América Latina un libro publicado por la Editorial Futuro de Buenos Aires titulado El Virreynato del Río de la Plata. Su estructura econòmica y social La temprana edición en lengua española -la versión alemana databa sólo de tres años antes -, de esta opera prima del joven historiador alemán Manfred Kossok (1930Kossok ( -1993 lo dio rápidamente a conocer en el campo de la historiografía latinoamericana. Ya Kossok había trabajado anteriormente sobre el sistema colonial español, en colaboración con su Maestro en Leipzig Walter Markov, línea de especialización que desarrolló a partir de sus estudios en Colonia bajo la orientación del conocido hispanoamericanista Richard Konetzke.El Virreynato del Río de la Plata sobresalió de inmediato no sólo por la rigurosidad de la investigación -su enjundioso aparato crítico revelaba su basamento en una prolija y paciente consulta de documentos y fuentes secundarias: desde los bandos de gobernadores y virreyes hasta libros de historia de más diversas corrientes de pensamiento -, sino también por ofrecer un cuadro novedoso, desde el ángulo marxista, de las conexiones sociales y económicas entre la época colonial y la emancipación. Este libro, elaborado por tres experimentados investigadores sociales, se ocupa de relatar, en forma breve y didáctica, la historia de cada una de estas tres revoluciones, pero también de valorarlas desde la perspectiva de la historia comparada, poniendo de relieve semejanzas, diferencias, significados y peculiaridades. La inmensa mayoría de las obras existentes trata solo de una de ellas en particular, pasando por alto las conexiones entre estos procesos, así como las claves para comprender sus verdaderas dinámicas y su persistencia en el imaginario de los pueblos latinoamericanos.
