This paper presents a numerical approach for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) human exposure assessment. It combines ray-tracing for the estimation of the wireless channel and the finite-difference time-domain method to simulate the exposure of a realistic human phantom. We apply it to estimate the exposure in a model of an industrial indoor environment with a single massive MIMO base station (BS). The exposure scenarios include line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight propagation with the BS using equal gain transmission precoding at 3.5 GHz. Calculated channel parameters are discussed in comparison with the data available in the literature. The exposure in the phantom's head is evaluated in terms of the peak-spatial specific absorption rate averaged over a 10-g cube and referenced to the free-space time-averaged Poynting vector magnitude at the same location.

The rapid development of the number of wireless broadband devices requires that the induced uplink exposure be addressed during the design of the future wireless networks, in addition to the downlink exposure due to the transmission of the base stations. In this paper, the positions and power levels of massive MIMO-LTE (Multiple Input Multiple Output-Long Term Evolution) base stations are optimized towards low power consumption, low downlink and uplink electromagnetic exposure and maximal user coverage. A suburban area in Ghent, Belgium has been considered. The results show that the higher the number of BS antenna elements, the fewer number of BSs the massive MIMO network requires. This leads to a decrease of the downlink exposure (−12% for the electric field and −32% for the downlink dose) and an increase of the uplink exposure (+70% for the uplink dose), whereas both downlink and uplink exposure increase with the number of simultaneous served users (+174% for the electric field and +22% for the uplink SAR). The optimal massive MIMO network presenting the better trade-off between the power consumption, the total dose and the user coverage has been obtained with 37 64-antenna BSs. Moreover, the level of the downlink electromagnetic exposure (electric field) of the massive MIMO network is 5 times lower than the 4G reference scenario.

In the near future, wireless coverage will be provided by the base stations equipped with dynamically-controlled massive phased antenna arrays that direct the transmission towards the user. This contribution describes a computational method to estimate realistic maximum power levels produced by such base stations, in terms of the time-averaged normalized antenna array gain. The Ray-Tracing method is used to simulate the electromagnetic field (EMF) propagation in an urban outdoor macro-cell environment model. The model geometry entities are generated stochastically, which allowed generalization of the results through statistical analysis. Multiple modes of the base station operation are compared: from LTE multi-user codebook beamforming to the more advanced Maximum Ratio and Zero-Forcing precoding schemes foreseen to be implemented in the massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication protocols. The influence of the antenna array size, from 4 up to 100 elements, in a square planar arrangement is studied. For a 64-element array, the 95th percentile of the maximum time-averaged array gain amounts to around 20% of the theoretical maximum, using the Maximum Ratio precoding with 5 simultaneously connected users, assuming a 10 s connection duration per user. Connection between the average array gain and actual EMF levels in the environment is drawn and its implications on the human exposure in the next generation networks are discussed.

The article describes a numerical approach for Massive MIMO channel modeling that accounts for the effects of electromagnetic coupling between a user and the receiving device. The modeling is performed by a combination of the Finite-Difference Time-Domain and the Ray-Tracing methods, supplemented with a stochastic geometry model of the propagation environment. The influence of user-coupling on the channel properties was studied statistically using the singular value spread and matrix power ratio metrics of the channel correlation matrix. The time-averaged Poynting vector distribution in the near-field of the receiver was evaluated using a realistic human phantom model and the Maximum Ratio Transmission precoding scheme in the downlink. The average enhancement of the timeaverage Poynting vector magnitude at the receiver location, compared to the surrounding area, was found to be around 10 dB when using 36 antenna elements at the base station. The electromagnetic field exposure of the phantom was assessed in terms of the 10g-average peak-spatial Specific Absorption Rate and compared with the existing public guidelines. Comparison of the EMF and exposure results provides a new perspective on the future regulatory procedures.

The design of a massive MIMO network requires a channel model that captures the Spatio-temporal dimensions of the propagation environment. In this paper, we propose a novel method combining Hybrid Raytracing -Finite difference time domain (FDTD) and network planner tools to address this requirement. This method provides accurate and realistic EMF exposure models for the design of a massive MIMO network. Using this method, we proceed with the optimization of the BS's locations under the low power consumption and low EMF exposure constraints. Assuming equal preference of the optimization objectives, the simulations show that the uplink localized 10g dose appears to be the dominant factor of the localized 10g EMF exposure. Moreover, a massive MIMO network designed to serve 224 simultaneous active users at the same time-frequency resource is subject to an increase of the total whole-body dose (2 times higher in downlink and +18% in uplink), compared to a design with 14 active users. However, in the same conditions, the downlink localized 10g dose reduces (20 times lower) whereas the uplink localized 10g dose increases (+23%) in comparison with the scenario with fewer users (14). Besides, the electromagnetic field strength in all locations obtained with this new method is 2 times weaker compared to a 4G LTE network, while complying with the international guidelines.INDEX TERMS 5G, antenna arrays, beamforming, EMF exposure, massive MIMO, power consumption, network planner, precoding, ray-tracing.
