Missionaries played a significant role in presenting China to a French Canadian audience. Whatever the "heritage" missionaries in French Canada left before i960, China was undoubtedly their greatest effort and it did leave a historical legacy. Despite the cultural gap, French Canadian literature focused on China because of the historic Jesuit links, the Sainte-Enfance [Holy Childhood], and missionaries who brought two distant cultures into contact. Even though Québec secularized during the 1960s, the China endeavor maintained avid French Canadian interest in China to the present day.
En mai 2006, le gouvernement du Québec a dévoilé sa nouvelle politique internationale soulignant au passage un « nouvel ordre mondial marqué par l’ascension des économies émergentes ». Cette nouvelle politique internationale rappelait qu’il ne fallait pas abandonner les partenaires traditionnels comme les États-Unis et l’Europe, mais promettait de développer de nouveaux marchés clairement identifiés aux économies émergentes comme celles de la Chine, l’Inde, le Brésil et le Mexique. Après une décennie de réalignement de la politique internationale québécoise axée sur les économies émergentes, un bilan s’impose.
